I cannot imagine what it will look like - and being able to see the sea from the roundabout bar and compass is something to look forward to for July!
regards, Kath.

Its not the fact that you leave threads like this one run that makes an open forum, its the way that anyone with a slightly different opinion to the administrators of the site (or their sycophantic followers) gets shot down in flames.
Sometimes you do have to remove the rose tinted spectacles and get real, YES you all love Roda and its people, but the majority of you have been coming for years, made friends etc and want for nothing or nowhere else, but put yourselves in the shoes of someone on their first visit? I know for a fact that I would not be impressed, and these ARE the people that need to be impressed, the next generation of Roda lovers like yourselves.
It is a sad fact that the major holiday companies are dropping properties yearly, or going bust, and this site and others do an important job in trying to promote independant travel, but again, you will find that most "independants" have already visited the place they want to go on holiday, be it Roda or elsewhere so "new" faces need to be attracted from somewhere, but many people I spoke to that were staying in Acharavi and Sidari last summer went to Roda for one evening and said they wouldn't bother again.
To be honest, I love Corfu, I used to love visiting Roda (never actually stayed there) but over the past 2 - 3 years the resort has hardly moved on at all and with the exception of a small handful of businesses the place is starting to look old, run down and very tired.
The roads in Roda and neigbouring resorts ARE a mess, they were a big talking point all last summer and I see no signs of things being different this year, Yes the new scheme will tidy up the village a little if done correctly, but something also needs to be done with the frontages of many of the bars etc too. It must say something to people that the three smartest bars on the main road, Nemo's, Mistral and Oscars last summer were probably the busiest bars in the main street (and also through winter I imagine).

I do not apprecaite being called a sycophant, I come on this forum to discuss what is going on in Roda and Corfu, I feel if we have anything negative to say we say it without being rude and insulting. I have introduced many friends to Roda over the years the latest convert only visiting within the last year or so. I for one prefer the old village mish mash of styles and cosy atmosphere to the shiny loud modern frontages that make every resort appear the same. I am of the opinion that some of the accommodation does need updating but would rather have a bit of old fashioned furniture to no soul. The busy bars are the ones that stand out, maybe because of their appearance or perhaps for other reasons, of the four you mentioned I have only ever been in the MIstral because of the convenience, the facility of somewhere for my youngest to play, the sport and the evening entertainment and of course the cheery staff absolutey not because of it's frontage. Please if you have something to say be polite or everything you have to say will be treated with disdain and any valid points you have to make will be missed. This topic was nothing to do with car tax and there was no need to introduce it here. if there isnt a relevant thread on which to post your opinions then create one so that people who are interested can debate there.

The adminstrators of the forum give their opinions in the hope that other members will express theirs in response. Our aim is to stimulate discussion, not to stifle it. The only editing of this thread was to remove offensive material. My understanding of an 'open forum' is one where information & ideas are exchanged with other interested parties.

I've taken more pics, kaz, just for you. Unfortunately I can't show you yet because we've just had the computer serviced and the download programme needs re-installing. Soon, though ...
The work is progressing well in the drier weather and it's really warm today. The surface water drainage has just about 100 metres left to go before it reaches the Afrodite - where it goes from there remains to be seen! At Alfa supermarket, Panaiotis hopes to move on Sunday to his new premises opposite Estrella. The old street lights will be removed and new double lamps fitted in a more traditional style. The new pavements will be lined with trees, much as they are outside of 'Sunriders' and the whole of the street will be resurfaced. I think visitors will be impressed when they first arrive in April.

OK then, I apologise if I offended anyone with the use of the word sycophantic, it may be hard to believe but my intention was not to offend, just maybe open a few eyes, and perhaps even stimulate a little discussion, which as your admin states is what this open forum is all about, eh Steve? Everything else in my previous post still stands though. Yes Debbie, you may have introduced many friends to Roda over the years, but they came into it with all YOUR previous knowledge of the place, they got to meet YOUR friends that you had made on previous visits when Roda was not as far behind other Corfu (and Greek) resorts as it is now. Imagine yourself as a first time vistor to Corfu, never hearing about Roda, but stumbing onto this website and hearing how fantastic everything is there from those of you who love the place, (as you said in a previous post, warts and all) what do you honestly think the vast majority will think of it? Those warts, which seem to be getting more and more each year, are the things that put people off visiting the place again and again, and with less and less opportunities to stay in Roda with a holiday company each summer, the main trade in the village MUST come from, day trippers from other resorts, who will not return more than once if things are not to their liking from the off. Independent travel is one way forward, but this alone will not make Roda survive as a holiday destination, especially with flight prices being as high as they are and the financial situation both in the UK and in Greece being in such a desparate state. I applaud anything that promotes Corfu and her resorts, but things must be portrayed how they are, not how people expect they will be, or how they would like them to be, or even, heaven forbid, how they imagine them to be when they close their eyes! A forum such as this needs to be honest and open, and the people who post here have to reflect this and tell people the truth, whether it be good or bad.

Debbie, The reason i mentioned the car tax was purely and simply because of the lack of monies that are needed for general maintenance of resorts--which Steve did mention. The revenue which is not being collected from foreign vehicles could go a long way towards this problem.

You know - we all have our favourite places in Corfu, and 90% of the time it's the place we first went to - I know it is with me, and I went the whole hog and ended up living there for years and have never regretted a day of it. Everywhere has warts and the people who love the island will defend to the death those warts - and more power to them. I have a good Greek friend of many years standing who still tells me to 'come home' because my head is English but my heart is Greek - it is, and will always stay that way. Roda is a bit tired, but I still love it or I wouldn't go there and having lived there I understand the avrio mentality and actually enjoy it - but Corfiots have a way of getting things done when they put their minds to it - so it will be alright on the night. I'm sure anyone who arrives in Roda for the first time and hates it would probably love somewhere else on the island - it's just finding the right place for you at the end of the day, and as long as it's in Corfu, who cares. Of course there are things which are wrong - and I have to say foreign cars with no tax is one of them, but that applies to wherever in the world you are - some people do the right thing, some don't. I do - and always have done - local artisans, local shop[ing, car bought in the country I live in but I also bend the rules a little when it suits - don't we all?

Guest, your comments noted and welcome. A good recipe always contains a good dollop of acid. Posters on this site may seem a bit honey-coated but if you were to hear the Administrators ''discussing'' content youmayrealise that we tend to show a ''Happy Face'' here, not just engage in serious discussion but try to lighten any topic which is brought up. ''Old and Tired'', that sounds like my Profile. I have an easy chair which left the 'old and tired' stage quite a few years ago but it's still the most comfortable seat in my house. Shirl has finally persuaded me to get a new one but I'm not a happy bunny. Shiny new leather ...if I must......shiny new Roda ....I think not !!!!

A forum such as this needs to be honest and open, and the people who post here have to reflect this and tell people the truth, whether it be good or bad. Would it not be easy for us NOT to post pictures of the works, both current and from last years' phase 1 of the drainage installation? The fact that we do take photographs and comment on what is happening from a factual point of view keeps this forum extremely honest

couple of points...
i came to roda first time in sep 2008, i didn't knwo anyone who'd been before, just foudn it on the web and went with my cousin (at the time i was aged 31 and she was 29). as i was travelling without my now husband, i wanted soemwhere that sounded like a nice community where i would feel safe going out of an evening, and wouldn't feel like i was on display being a coupel of females (Which you often feel like in other resorts).
davinia and i both fell in love with the place despite knowing noone in the area before we came. i personally loved the relaxing atmosphere which other resorts miss, and teh fact that it still has its good old family fun - greek nights, quizes etc. it was this that has drawn me back (i am returning in a few months with my husband). yes i can see why it wouldn't appeal to everyone - some people like their clubs, nightlife etc, but for me roda was just what i was looking for.
and just to add - roda wasnt my first holiday in corfu - i did kavos back many years ago, but we move don when it became too built up and commercialised, this is also why i am weiry of sidari.
