Hi bull661 - as far as I know, the smaoking ban does not come in to Greece until 1st January 2010.
As to when it might actually be enforced here, that is open to much discussion.
As Greece is home to the largest population of smokers, it may take some doing. The minister of health, in November just after the Bill had been submitted, said that he expected the law to be enforced by those wanting a cleaner environment.
Time will tell.
We look forwad to seing you in Roda later this year.

thanks for your reply Dimitris Avramopoulos announced on the 4th of december they were bringing it in 6 months early and announced 3000 euro fines for bar owners ignoring it but i guess as with most things in the home of democracy if the people dont want it policing it would be pointless not a big deal for most people but i will only holiday where i can get some respite from the new labour jackboot cheers

Hi bull - I expect that in Athens it will be more rigorously enforced, especially where there are high numbers of visitors. It may take a while to reach all four hundred and forty-four corner of Greece and then there is the matter of Corfu being different from everybody else. It is well known that there is one law for Greece and another one for Corfu! We do see laws being enforced in Corfu - it's a bit like the Spanish Inquisition - there's a big flurry, screech of brakes, flash of blue lights, and lookouts in the street spread the word faster than a quad-bike on aviation fuel! The net result - a couple of fines to make an example and that's it for the year. Smoking may be much the same.

Hi Paul. I fully sympathize with you on the smoking issue, I really can't see it becoming a big problem in Corfu, at least initially, even if it does it is rarely too cold to sit at an outside table during the holiday season, there will be more sat outside than inside I think. Pete.

This was from an online newspaper last November.
The following news report was observed in the Greek/English online newspaper Kathimerini yesterday, Saturday 8th November.
NO SMOKE
Parliament passes 2010 ban on smoking in public places
A bill foreseeing the imposition of a blanket ban on smoking in public places from January 1, 2010, was voted through Parliament yesterday. The bill, which was backed by all parties, will lead to smoking being prohibited in all restaurants, bars and offices and on public transport. In offices, and certain other spaces, designated areas will be set aside to accommodate smokers. The ambitious legislation also foresees fines of between 1,000 and 20,000 euros for traders found to have sold cigarettes or alcohol to minors.
Do you think it will work
Yeiamas, Chris

The smoking ban in total will be brought into force as of 1st July 2009, six months earlier than previously planned. On other forums the question has arose in two fold, will the Corfiots abide by the ruling, or act their normal nonchalant way, and stick two fingers up to the ruling.
Already in Kassiopi some bars have put up professionally made signs informing patrons and staff that they must leave the bar, taverna or restaurant to smoke.
Because Greece in general, with the backing of the Greek Tourist Board is determined to make a green effort. This proclamation will be enforced suring the Summer Season, with incongnito representatives visiting various resorts, and unplanned times to check on the enforcement. And I also believe that a large number of bar, taverna and restaurant owners will abide by it for the sake of thier business and money. However, they will be compensated by the fact that during the close season, they can smoke as much as they like with the properties.
I do think this is based more around the tourist, because of the larger number of people that increase the population of the islands. Most do not mind stepping outside anyway for a smoke, specailly if you have non smokers at your table, it is only polite to do so. Plus Corfu and such places as the essence of the weather, unlike here in the UK.
It will be worth seeing the outcome and reviews on this at the end of the season.

Has the issue about the size of premises been resolved yet Chris? Only a few weeks ago there was provision for establishments less than 70 sq.m. to choose smoking or non-smoking. A lot of tourist bars & restaurants fall below that threshold.

the only reason governments bring in bans is the money big pharmaceutical companies pay them however its not for me to comment on a foreign state it now looks like i shall have to revise my holiday plans shame really as i have been going to roda since 1988 and since the ban in england its been an even bigger pleasure oh well all good things come to an end

A lot of tourist bars & restaurants fall below that threshold. Steve There was nothing mentioned in the large debate story that came out of the Government offices and Tourist Boards which is where I got the information from. The story was too large to copy over. But definately nothing mentioned about size of property. Yeiamas, Chris PS: Bull, is there really any need to be like that. Surely one can enjoy Corfu, even Roda without the odd cigarette. ;D ;D ;D ;D

About a month or so ago, Chris, there was a summary of the proposals online and there was speculation as to whether the 70sq.m. restriction should be reduced to 50sq.m. or done away with altogether. I've seen nothing since.
