There was always some considerable doubt about the way in which local businesses would interpret and apply the new rules which come into force tomorrow. It seems now, that the government may be back-pedalling and some of the regulations are being 'relaxed'.

I still think they should have stuck to their original date which would have enabled everyone to have the winter to prepare for these new regulations. If the regulations are being relaxed then maybe it will make it easier for people to prepare at their own pace!! Avrio!!

The following news article is taken from the online Greek & English newspaper, "The Kathimerini" date, Tuesday, 30th June 2009. There appears to still be some degree of confusion over the ruling for restaurants and tavernas, but personally, and with a smile on my face, I think it is the traders who are pulling the strings, and looking for an end of season compromise on any adjustments, alterations on their properties. This is mentioned in the text below. I would have thought tomorrow should be the day that the ruling comes into force, in particular for those who do not have to make alterations, but decide on in accordance with the smaller places if they are going to be non smoking or smoking. An easy choice I think. A compromise on the bigger properties, being told to ensure that the changes are made at the end of the season, and in place before the start, or you do not open. At least it was not slapped in their face like it was done with the one eyed leader of our country.

Traders still in dark on smoking ban facts
Just one day before Greece is due to introduce strict regulations to crack down on smoking in public places, in line with European Union law, the Health Ministry yesterday still had not issued the official decision explaining the obligations of bars and restaurants.
Mayors and prefects said they had received dozens of queries from traders regarding the necessary changes to their premises and possible changes to their operating licenses. Without a ministerial decision, local authorities say they cannot give traders clear answers to queries.
Speaking to Kathimerini, a high-ranking source at the ministry said the decision in question was due to be made public today. The source added that most bars and restaurants operated outdoor premises over summer and so would have until October to make changes to their premises. According to the new regulations, bars and restaurants larger than 70 square meters must create separate sections for smokers, while owners of establishments smaller than 70 square meters must decide whether to declare the premises exclusively smoking or nonsmoking. The City of Athens yesterday said that it had received 400 applications from establishments smaller than 70 square meters for the special sticker that will establish them as nonsmoking premises. These 400 bars and restaurants represent about one in 10 of establishments of their size in Athens.[/i]
