hi Kaz, Lola still has the sunbeds, but... the downside of what steve is describing , is that because of the businesses taking over part of the beach (which I agree, really looks very nice),she lost almost half of what used to be her area. she had about 45 beds before ,she told me and now only half. Another downside is that the volleybal area cannot be used anymore because the restaurant closest to it,has "claimed" it by making a "gangboard/gangway" from the beach area to their terrace. Steve can you explain how this works in greece? I always thought the beach was for all to enjoy, now the young (and older) cannot enjoy their game of volleyball anymore and people like Lola ,whose only income is the sunbeds, are treated bad ,I really feel for her.

Hi petraw....thankyou for information re beach.....I assumed the beach was rented from the council, could be wrong.......yes, very sad for the people who enjoyed a game of volleyball...we often watched the younger kiddies playing there.....oh well, nothing stays the same...onwards and upwards!!!

Was looking very delapidated this year when I was there. Nobody went near it & that was before El Mar put seats on the beach.

I'm confused as to whom Lola is - I thought it was the lady who has sunbeds at the western end of the beach near to Afroditi. I remember asking the owners of El Mar about the beach volleyball, but I can't recall what they said - I will ask again. The international beach volleyball tournament is not likely to be held here again as it is expensive for the village and brings in very little revenue. We do need new nets on the beach volleyball court, or maybe it could be moved a little further towards the Harbour Bar. As I understand it, all the new terraces have had permits issued.

Hi, I believe it is Alexandros on the Beach that has put a board walk on the beach leading to their tables. It does all look very inviting and so many people choose to eat on the new terraces on the beach. OK the volley ball area is restricted, but there is plenty of beach to use. There didn't used to be any sunbeds for hire so close to the road either. In fact I think there are many more sunbeds for hire on the beach than before, and the operators seem to be taking much more care of their patches by raking the beach every night. It does altogether look a lot more inviting.

I am surprised Steve doesn't know who Lola is as he is the expert on Roda. Lola runs the sunbeds between Harbour Bar and the rest of the taverns/bars. This is her income to keep her and her very ill husband surviving. I miss the volleyball as it is the only time I could get my husband to lay on the beach but I do know it wasn't a good income for Roda.

That description of Lola seems to fit the one I do know, who can still be seen every day near to Afroditi. Does she live behind Roxannes and near to Kosta's Apartments, and do they own the building that was used as a reptile house? I was not aware of anyone renting sunbeds between those run by the Harbour Bar, and those run by Pirates Bar.

the beds btween harbour and pirates are run by a lady from sfakera [probably not spelled right]and as for the volleyball court it was there long before EL-mar so why move it nearer to harbour bar

Never knew her name but the little old lady who owns the sunbeds by the Afroditi has a daughter who now does it. I used to watch her every morning putting them out and working so hard hitting in the umbrella spikes. This year her daughter was doing it and staying most of the day. I only saw her Mother on one morning she only stayed a few minutes. I think they live behind he Dolphin bar somewhere as I often saw her daughter there chatting but I may be wrong.

Alexandros(Smileys) and Newport now have sunbeds in front of their restaurants, in my humble opinion there are now far too many sunbeds for the amount of visitors willing to pay for them (as opposed to the ones I see laying down bedsheets from their various accomodations), not only is this yet another case of the Greeks cutting each others throats by just jumping on the bandwagon it also leads to a lack of "empty" beach for those who do not wish to pay for sunbeds, leading them to set up camp infront of people who have paid not just for the beds but also for the view.. Rant over. pete.

I am disappointed to hear about the volleyball court being no longer in use as one of the highlights of last years holiday was me and my 11 year old son playing volleyball with a group consisting of Polish, Italians and English, adults and children. Great time had by all, it will be missed! I also agree with Pete, more sunbeds means less room for people like my family who just like to sit on the beach for a short while where and when we want to... Seems people are trying to out do each other in the sunbed stakes. me thinks!

I must confess the beach area between Pirates and El Mar does have a "crowded" look to me - but as we never set foot on the beach it doesn't affect us - think Pete has hit the nail on the head about the "copying" culture and I would go so far as to say that although the area does look 'smarter' than a couple of years ago they now all look the same and no longer have their own "unique" identity any more. Just my opinion.
regards, Kath

Just to help with the confusion over people. Lola does live in Sfakera with her husband Andreas. The lady at the other end of the beach behind the taxi stand is Eleni. Her husband is Prokopis, and as Steve says he has health problems. Her daughter Aleka is now helping on the beach. Aleka's son Spiros works at the Coral. They do live down the alleyway behind the shop on the opposite corner to the Dolphin. I agree re the copying culture. People see someone making a little money doing something and hope they can also make some by doing the same. I just wish there was enough for all Roda to do well.
