There have been more cases of Covid on Corfu during October than during the whole of September with 7 reported in the last two days. This is worrying and everyone here should be aware and take all the sensible precautions. Remember in Bars and Tavernas it is seating only; dont be afraid to wear a mask if you feel your social distancing is not as much as you would like. Always wear a mask when in shops, banks, Drs etc and on buses or in taxis. If you think a place looks almost full find a place with more seats so you dont feel crowded. Finally if you a repeat visitor and know lots of others or locals dont assume because you are acquainted that all is safe and let your own guard slip.......be careful and safe at all times. If you dont have gloves then use the antiseptic gel or wipes regularly, especially before using a shop trolley or basket and again once you leave the shop; other things to be careful off and use gel after touching are things such as door handles, stair rails or anything that gets regular contact by many people: in particular wipe steering wheels and handlebars of any rented cars, quads, scooters, bikes before you use them. Corfu is still a safe place but buy keeping yourself safe you will stay safe and be able to enjoy your holiday.

..Greece had worst Covid day yesterday.....1259 new cases 12 deaths. There was a worst day yet 12 cases on Corfu........time to self isolate a bit more I think. They are still having what they call "crowding of the faithful" gatherings in Salonika where people meet without masks in large groups esp after lockdown time........crazy as cases are nearly 300 a day there......some people are idiots for sure.
The Govt health advisers say the crunch date is 6th November by which time we should see if the current lockdown measures working but they meet today to reconsider current lockdown rules and may tighten them......talk of earlier closing of bars and restaurants in worst affected areas.

Cases continue to be bad, over 2,000 on saturday so up to 39,260 with 626 deaths in Greece.
New rules from 6am Tuesday 3rd November. Greece split into Red and Yellow areas. Red is near total lockdown. Yellow less so. Areas wont change colour for at least 14 days.
Corfu is a Yellow area. New rules are; must wear mask indoors and out (not seen small prints issued only in Greek or a translation as yet so dont know if this means in own house and garden...I live alone so why?.....same really do I need mask when walking in the hills when I only see odd person working in the groves and pass none on the tracks); no gatherings (again not seen a definition....does this mean no church, no funerals....what?); curfew midnight to 5am; Uni online only; and some work related restrictions for 50% of private and public sector to do tele/online work only.
You can move between areas but must observe the rules of that area; however you are told specifically not to travel red to yellow for entertainment purposes, e'g go to cafe, bar, restaurant etc....you will be punished. SO they will be entering places nearby to red areas and checking where you live!! Personally I think they should have banned travel between areas for the 2 weeks except for work.

Due to aggressive increase in cases in last 5 days (yesterday was 2917 cases and 29 deaths!) the Government have quickly imposed a full National Lockdown effective from 6am Saturday 7th November until at least the 30th November. There were 21 cases on Corfu yesterday !!! This increase partly due to delays as tests having to be sent to Ionniana but is a worry.
As before you must have an SMS approving you being out or carry a form, (handwritten or printed version) stating number of reason why out, where you live, where you going, time left home, dated and signed. There are just 6 reasons; 1. Medical reasons; 2. Shops for essential supplies...open will be supermarkets, pharmicies, bakers, butchers, pet shops, kiosks, petrol stns, dry cleaning, optics and hearing. Bars, cafes, restaurants only open for delivery or take aways; 3. Public services if cannot do online, e.g. visit bank or ATM. 4. Help those in need, transport partner to/from work, children from school. 5. Attend a funeral if within the rules re numbers etc. 6. exercise or pet walking.
Health services and vets open. SOme schools will be open, more senior will work via internet.
From 9th, no travel out of your region unless to return to place of residence. All coming into Greece must have negative Covid test with 72 hours of travel. All leaving Greece must fill in PLF.
FIner details and points will be announced live on tv later today.

We are now a few days into lockdown and it is noticeably quieter with the early morning rush hour traffic, and there are a lot less people around in Acharavi, but more walkers along the beach road. There are the same 6 options for being out and about as there were for the first lockdown, but they hastily had to add taking children to school, as the schools were closed during the first one, and a form for picking olives as it wasn't the olive season back in the spring. The six options being 1- medical eg doctors and chemists 2 food shopping- supermarkets 3- going to bank or public services if can't do on-line 4- care including taking children to school or partner to work 5 funeral, wedding or baptism 6 - exercise and walking pets, no more than 2 and 1.5m apart, masks not required. There are also rules about number of people allowed in cars, the percentage allowed on public transport etc., but I'm on shank's pony at the moment so only need my facemask. You are really only supposed to go out as little as possible and stay close to your home as travel between areas of Greece is not permitted. There are police checking you have the relevant approval and identification, a €300 fine is imposed, businesses face really heavy fines. Walking into Acharavi yesterday most cafes were closed and only a few open for take away with seating removed and barriers in place. The supermarkets were open as were the phone shops, the paper shop and the other food shops (fishmonger and greengrocer). Even though it was very early afternoon it was extremely quiet and the vast majority of people were wearing masks. Luckily here in Roda we have such a good selection of shops we can stay local, and we have some good walks here as well. I will miss having my glass of wine with friends on an evening as I rarely drink at home without Steve. It is only a few days in and I had planned to do so much, but this good weather is keeping my outdoors! I am sure we will get rain eventually so those chores can mostly wait until then.

Sadly cases on Corfu look bad at the moment.....some delays as the tests are coming via Ionnanna. Friday 10 new cases, Saturday 13, Sunday 3, Monday 1 and yesterday 17!!!! There has also been another death; this time a priest from North Corfu who had been in hospital for 3 weeks. We need this lockdown and its best to only go out if you really have too......and if you walk for exercise get into the hills where it is quieter. I see many walking past my house now who I never normally see out for exercise but they stick to the main roads so have to wear a mask.
Deaths overall in Greece are on the increase too with 41 the last few days (each day that is) alone. We are now at nearly 60,000 cases and 866 deaths. This virus is not going away anytime soon buy the look of things here and in Europe as a whole.

There is a change too at Supermarkets; they are now no longer allowed to sell durable goods, e.g. electric fires, light bulbs, bed linen etc for the duration of the lockkdown. The reason it is unfair they should sell when high street shops who specialise in these items are closed. They can like the shops sell online.

There are to new restrictions starting on Friday 13th. There is to be a curfew from 9pm to 5am, when you are only able to be away from home for work or for walking your dog close to your home. 40 people were fined in Corfu recently for violations of the covid rules.

The grim figures from Greece announced this morning are:-
3316 new cases of covid of which 882 are in Thessaloniki where the doctors at the hospital are saying they are in danger of being overwhelmed. The 3316 number is the highest ever figure since the start of the pandemic. 50 people have died 310 are intubated
On Corfu there were 20 new cases, two of whom were Alex and his partner Kaia from the Drunken Sailor, though they report that they feel fine despite Alex having a fever which prompted the test. They got their results in hours and are now quarantining for 14 days.

there were again over 3000 cases and another 38 deaths in Greece yesterday; totals are 69,675 cases and 997 deaths. As Jan said hospitals have run out of ICU beds in many areas. It is a shame they waited until the tourist season finished to do this full lockdown as it is now in a bad situation. In Just the week since total lockdown there have been over 15,000 cases and 250 deaths; most of these would have caught the virus before lockdown though there was a partial lockdown on the mainland in some areas. This is the result, I'm afraid, of people ignoring lockdown Rules in the most part. There are lots of cases in refugee camps and there is a prison that was tested recently where there has been 1 death and now 100 cases! Hopefully as the lockdown, now extended, gets into its 2nd week we will start to see a reduction in cases.
Turning back to the tourist season.........on Corfu there were 185,000 UK tourists (arrive at airport) against last year 553,000 which is a decrease of 66.5%. The overall figures for Corfu airport arrivals only is 72.4% with just 401,000 arrive against last year total of 1,458,000. The financial impact of this can only be imagined.

Yesterday it was reported that there had been 71 deaths in Greece with 1698 new cases (5 of which were from Corfu), and there were 392 people intubated. The police were also reported to have fined 38 people on the island for infringements of the restrictions. Yesterday the police were checking cars and pedestrians at the crossroads in Roda. I had my approval on my phone but they didn't ask me.
