Last week had an increase in new cases by about 1,000 in Greece with the Corfu figure being just 4 less than the previous week. This was mainly due to there being many more tests as people not vaccinated needed tests to work and so did returning schoolchildren. If just over 20% of the weeks new cases were those aged 17 and under. The number of deaths in Greece was 270 in the week being almost the same as the previous week.

The Greek government has decided to offer a third dose of a vaccine against Covid-19 to people over 60 or otherwise at greater risk from the novel coronavirus, based on the latest scientific evidence showing that a booster shot is needed to bolster immunity in these groups, ANA reports. The reasoning behind the decision was outlined to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency on Sunday by a member of the government's health experts' committee and National Vaccination Committee, Vana Papaevangelou."Scientists have singled out the third dose for the immunosuppressed and very elderly - over 80 - where a third dose appears not to be a booster but a reinforcement of immunity as they did not respond well to the first doses due to immunosuppression and age," she noted. There was also a necessity for a third dose for those over 60, she added since the data showed that the intensity of the immune response was affected by age."We have announced that those over 60 will need a third dose of the vaccine because laboratory studies and epidemiological figures show that the older a person is and the greater the period that has elapsed since their second dose - at least six months - the higher the chances that they will be infected with the virus," she pointed out while clarifying that the chances of serious illness and death were low.

The Covid report for 3rd November.
In Corfu there were 93 new cases. For Greece as a whole there 6100 new cases bring the total number to 760,592 Sadly there were 49 deaths 431 patients are intubated in ICU's of which 84% are non-vaccinated, and 15 % are had both doses. The were 343 admissions to hospital
Because of the rising number of cases the Greek government has brought in some new restrictions with immediate effect. If you are double vaccinated you can go where ever you like provided you can show the necessary certificate. If you are non-vaccinated you can only go to food shops, churches and pharmacies . Anywhere else you have to show a recent negative rapid antigen or PCR covid test. The price though has come down to around €5 per test for the rapid one. In my mind this is obviously a push to get more people vaccinated. Business that are caught with people not obeying these rules are facing fines starting at €5000 and the customer also gets fined. The synod of the Greek church has said it would encourage worshoppers to have both vaccinations or the test prior to attending services.

The Covid report for 4th November.
Here in Corfu there were another 93 new cases. The total for Greece was 6808 making the number of cases 767,376 Sadly there were 42 deaths bringing that total to 16,151. There are 441 patients intubated in ICU's of which 84% are unvaccinated. The number of ICU beds has been increased to over 1000 to cope with the surge. There were 363 people admitted to hospital.
Those new rules I spoke of yesterday come into effect tomorrow not yesterday as I thought. A restuarant in Corfu town was fined €10,000 and closed for 2 weeks for having a diner with no certificate. The diner was also fined €300. In a seperate case a person was fined for presenting someone else's certificate! They are getting tough with these rules.

The Covid report for 6th November.
Here on Corfu there were 63 new cases For Greece as a whole there were 6393 new cases bringing that total to 780,621 Sadly there were 43 deaths bringing that total to 16,243 There were 459 patients intubated in ICU's 82% were completely unvaccinated. There were 344 new admissions to hospital.
The new rules start today with many more people going to be tested, so it is only reasonable to expect the numbers testing positive to rise. All unvaccinated people will need to be rapid tested every two days if they want to go anywhere apart from food shops, pharmacies and churches. School children are all tested frequently here anyway.

There has been a sharp rise in cases here in Corfu and across Greece, which is being blamed on how contagious the lateste delta varient is proving to be. Which is why the Greek government has introduced the latest rules and restrictions. My friends and I were asked not only for our vaccination certificates but also our ID to confirm who were were. I know there had been a report of a person getting fined for producing a certificate that wasn't theirs, also the restaurant was fined!

Here on the island they have temprarily suspended hospital outpatients to deal with the influx of Covid patients. There are 30 Covid patients in the hospital between the infectious diseases ward, pulmonary and the general ward. Three patients on the pulmonary ward have tested positive for Covid which lead to the suspension of outpatients. As a note you have to have a negative rapid flow even to enter the hospital. There are two patients intubated in Corfu ICU.
