Glad Scotland approved the no quarantine for double jabbed but still no change to the fact that UK residents living in amber countries have to quarantine when visiting the UK because the NHS cannot - or will not - recognise EU certificate details of vaccinations. Time to get this sorted now - 'they' are actually stopping people from going home to the UK to visit family or friends just because they choose not to live there. Pathetic

The week ending Sunday was a bad week for Greece and for Corfu...........overall cases now total 456,467 with 12,856 deaths. There were 17,450 new cases in the week and 59 deaths. That is about a 40% increase on the previous week. Here on Corfu there were 158 new cases which was a 100% increase on the previous week.

Sadley the death of a 73 year old Brit has been reported after spending 10 day in the ICU here. Apparently the person had had both jabs but did have underlying health conditions. Yesterday there were reported to be no people left in ICU here but 10 in the Covid ward. There were 4 local Corfiots and 6 visitors, though some of them were still undergoing diagnosis.

Cases in the last 7 days on Corfu increased to 179 (up 16.5%) and in Greece as a whole by just under 18,000.SO the rate of increase is slowing and the peak is expected to be in August. There were 48 deaths in Greece last week. There are more adverts on the TV and talks by Health Officials and Government to encourage those not yet vaccinated to do so: the take up rate for the under 30's is still a concern. There have again been protests in Athens with regard to vaccinations; some against the Government policy of not making them mandatory and others against the rules that discriminate against those not jabbed: i.e. not allowed to go to the theatre, to restaurants etc. It seems a fair percentage of those not jabbed are Health workers and this leads to other un-jabbed people wondering why when they are working with Covid patients. Its the at times conflicting information being given out that leads to confusion in the minds of those yet to make the final decision to be jabbed or not.

Cases up in Corfu from 186 weekending 1st August to 283 weekending 8th August...............is it due to extra tourists as many Italians here now? IN Greece as a whole there was an increase too with about 18,800 cases in the week and deaths also up slightly at 97. Corfu is being monitored with possibility of mini lockdown like on some other Islands looming large. Leds hope not so but increases in cases is a worry

And it is still rising...........Corfu 365 cases in the 7 days with Friday being a record high day of 73. It seems they are saying the increases are due to Tourists from the Balkan countries.
Greece as a whole had 22,499 new cases in the week and 143 deaths. One death was a double vaccinated man of 70 who had no underlying health issues according to the Hospital statement. A similar case was reported in the UK at the weekend so the advice being given is not to worry but keep staying safe; i.e. social distance and where masks as necessary.

There was a report in Enimerosi today that an 82 year old unvaccinated lady died in ICU yesterday. There are no further patients in ICU but there are 19 patients on the infectious diseases ward, leaving only 5 beds spare. They reported that as soon as people are discharged they are replaced. A worrying situation.

The last 7 days saw a slight decrease in totals of new cases in Greece from the previous week.....21909 new cases. A small increase in deaths to 160. Corfu had an increase in new cases to 388 (about 6.5% increase).
The Government announcement today though aimed at Greeks and Residents to get vaccinated reduces the cost of the Rapid Flow Test to 10€. This will save a few € for tourists who need to have this test before they return to the UK from their holidays.

ANother small drop in Covid cases last week to 21769 new cases in Greece but deaths increased to 230. Corfu new cases dropped by a handfull to 383.
There has been a death of a 69 year old lady from Karousades in Ionianna Hospital which is said to be related to Covid though she has had previous health issues; very sad. Her funeral is today and will be well attended as she was a well known chef in Acharavi in the past.

The figures look bad, but I read the positive cases for North Lanarkshire where my daughter lives. There there was 1000 positve cases of covid per 100,000 population last week. The population of Corfu is just over 100,000 and had those 383 cases a third of the cases of North Lanarkshire. Feel much safer here. My granddaughter there has tested positive for covid and her mum and sisters are unwell as well.

Last week the Corfu cases dropped to 301. In Greece as a whole the weekly number was about 17788 which again is a reasonable drop and deaths were down to 229. All encouraging.

It is also encouraging considering how the population is swollen at the minute with so many visitors. Greece having the most tourists arriving in the whole of Europe!

Last week there was a substantial drop in the number of new cases.........down to 14,588 in Greece as a whole but only a small decrease on Corfu (maybe reflecting the tourist numbers plus people getting tests before new Rules came in this week). Deaths in Greece were up at 264.
On a less encouraging note some 10.58% of those in itubation are double jabbed. This may show the need for a booster jab later this year. It does seem however that all of those affected are over the age of 70 and have underlying health issues.
The new Rules affective from yesterday are that to enter inside tavernas, restaurants, bars, cinemas, theatres, clubs, gyms, sports stadiums, use planes, ferries, long distance KTEL buses , trains etc one must either be fully vaccinated or have a negative test taken in the previous 48 hours. Unvaccinated people in certain jobs must take a rapid flow test either once or twice a week (depending on job) at their own cost (some jobs and schoolchildren are exempt from paying). The Rapid test is now 10€ or the bigger test 60€. Masks now must be worn outside if there is a crowd or busy areas. The idea behind this is to try to get those unvaccinated to do so as the current percentage of around 65% is deemed too low.......as the evenings close in and it will get cooler and wetter the Rules will deny them going out unless they pay for a test all the time.

Greece Introduces Booster Jab.......Greece is making a Covid-19 booster vaccine available to an estimated 285,000 people belonging to vulnerable groups from Tuesday, hoping to curb a rise in Delta variant infections.
Authorities started making booster jab appointments available from Tuesday to persons with compromised immune systems and individuals over the age of 60.
“It can be administered 6-8 months after the second dose,” said Maria Theodoridou, chair of the Greek National Vaccination Committee, on Monday. “For the immuno-compromised it can be given even four weeks after the second dose.”
