There are two pieces of news about the village yesterday. The main one for us residents is that Drossia reopens after Adonis's winter break on 12th February, he has been missed over the past two months.
The other piece of news is that Anna and Angelos have taken over the apartments at Alexandros Pool. I will try and find out more details. Anna is offering a free extra day if you book a week in May. Anna and Angelos have a loyal customer base, and a bar that has a great pool which must be one of the biggest in Roda. They also do great food with authentic Greek dishes and one of the best English breakfasts in the village with sausages from her brother who has the butchers in Acharavi. They are a tasty English suasage.

The burning ferry Euroferry Olympia on fire off the north coast of Corfu. The passengers and crew were evacuated onto the life boats and then onto local ferries to be brought to the port here. Apparently the vast majority of the passangers have been accounted for and those with minor injuries were taken to the hospital.

A combined force of firefighters are cooling the ferry down as the heat got to 5000C, and there is a fear that the welds could break apart. Two people trapped in a garage had been plucked from the vessel by rescuers in a helicopter and brought to land. One of the men is suffering from smoke inhalation. There are still around 12 people unaccounted for at this moment in time. A decision where to tow the vessel to in order for the firefighting to continue has yet to be taken. Our thoughts must be will the family and friends of the missing people.
The pall of smoke yesterday afternoon from the ferry, which is gone this morning.

The ferry was taken under tow yesterday and inched its way across our skyline, still with dark smoke pouring from it. She was surrounded by a small flotilla of safety vessels. The smoke did intensify for a while and during the evening as I walked home I could see two glowing hotspots high up in the vessel. I was surprised to still be able to see her this morning, and she was quite close to the shore. A lone truck driver climbed down into a safety vessel this morning, and managed to convey, despite a lack of English or Greek, that there were still several people still alive on the vessel. At one point she was creeping eastward towards Acharavi, but now is stationary just off Roda. The smoke plume does seem much less this afternoon.

The ferry has been moved to Kassiopi port. She has a slight list due to the amount of water sprayed on her to tackle the fire, but is not in danger of sinking. The removed the body of a Greek national from the ferry yesterday afternoon, and there is still hope in finding more passangers still alive after the rescued man yesterday spoke of hearing voices before climbing unaided from the ferry.

The newspaper report that the ferry had been towed to Kassiopi harbour was mistaken. She has been moved close to Kassiopi but still in the channel and is attached to an 'anchor' ship to prevent her drifting. The fires are still burning whilst they search for any surviving passnagers, though finding anyone alive after all this time must be slim. Relatives of the victims have started to gather in Corfu Town.

The latest information on the Euroferry fire is that they have recovered eight bodies from the stricken ferry and that three people are still unaccounted for. The post mortems on the first victims have shown that they all died from burning, some more affected than others. Truly awful. Our sympathies go to their families who are gathered at the port being cared for by officials from maritime ministry.

The latest news on the Euroferry is not good. It has been reported that after a great deal of effort they managed to get the doors open to enable the retrieval of the burt out vehicles, unfortunately the rush of oxygen into the garage re-ignited the fire. There are still three people missing on the ferry and the rescue mission continues.

It was reported yesterday in the Enimerosi paper that the last two bodies have been recovered from the ferry, both Bulgarian nationals and the y were found on deck three where the fire broke out. It was confirmed that the final death total was 11. The ferry will be emptied of any remaining fuel and vehicles before being towed away.

Relaxation of covid rules from start of May.
The rules regarding production of an EU/UK vaccination certificate for entry to shops, bars and restaurants have been suspended until the end of August. If unvaccinated you would no longer need to produce negative Covid tests. I couldn't see anything with regard to entry to Greece, but will try and find out, but I am assuming entry requirements are also suspended due to difficulties in processing them at entry ports.

The relaxation does not initially apply to use of face masks; this will not happen until 1st June. THen you will not need to wear a mask indoors but there will be exceptions; masks on public transport and in taxi; in the supermarket and anywhere there is crowding (though judging by the Parades people ignore that and nothing happens). These will be confirmed later.
Re entry into Greece the minister said there will be a separate announcement shortly. So we can expect it before our Easter.

Covid travel requirements. I understand that for the moment you need to be fully vaccinated with the appropriate certificate or have a negative PCR test within 72 hours or a lateral flow within 48 hours. For a full list check with either the Greek or UK government sites.

I had a couple of walks around the village yesterday. The purpose of the first one was to check out the new Express supermarket. It is still owned by Yiannis, but he has become an outlet for the French supermarket Carrefour. They used to have a presence in town but closed down many years ago. It appears that all the Express supermarkets around the island have all been changed to the Carrefour brand. Yiannis certainly has expanded the size of the shop, and it is now a well-stocked business. With a much larger range of fresh vegetables and fruit than before to complement the increased range of non-fresh products. He is expecting new fridges and lighting to be fitted soon. Part of the shop is still selling goods aimed at the tourists and holiday makers. It looks a large undertaking for him and we wish him well.

The major piece of news about the village is that Sandy, from Sandy's Arms is retiring on 31st Ausust to spend more time with her family. The business has been sold to Roda long-timers Bob and Adele who are hoping to open for business on the 1st September. They will, of course, put there own stamp on the bar, but hope to keep it similar to the quiet friendly bar it is now. Sandy has been running her bar for fourteen years, which is a record for that bar, and she must be admired for taking on a business single handed and making it such a success and an integral part of Roda. She will be very much missed, though I know she plans to visit us in the future. I'm sure we all wish the new owners, Bob and Adele, every success for the future.
