All that rain last week. A lot was soaked up by my cacti but when the sun came out a few days later the water couldn't wait to escape and evaporate away.

On the walk into Sfakera from my house I spotted the first of this years snowdrops. This photo is not from Sfakera but borrowed from the Corfu Flaura and Fauna FB group.

It may be the middle of January but the good weather has meant that we still have bourgainvillia and osteospernum's still in flower in the sheltered lane by the church.

A stunning photo curtesy of Tricia Giles of spring flowers in an olive grove. They are usually strimmed by the time the season starts.

Lovely asphodels in front of a local garden awaiting strimming. The garden was full of flowers but they don't show up too well on the photo. There are so many of these flowers around at the moment, some olive groves are full of them. I can't say that I've seen so many in years gone by.

At this time of year our countryside is dotted with patches of bright pink. They are from the blossom of the Judas tree (Cercis Siliquastrum) which come in two shades of pink and light one and deeper shade. The tree is so named as Judas Iscariot is supposed to have hung humself from one in remorse for turning Jesus in to the Romans. I was told that the sap of the tree is red, the same colour as blood, for the same reason. The tree comes in two forms, a bushy type and the more normal upright form. The blossom forms directly from the trunk and stems not from buds with the leaves coming after the flowers. Despite its unfortunate name I love seeing these beautiful trees in blossom in late spring.

I had a lovely walk with my friends from the village square at Nymphes, past the football ground, which has amazing views from the seats and up the valley to the waterfall. It was a cloudy but warm day and the meadows under the olive tress were full of flowers. We passed by a small flock of sheep and goats and got startled by a cow in a barn lowing. It is a rather steep climb down to the waterfall but they have put in some uneven dirt and log steps. It was worth it. I have been wanting to see them for years. Just up the hill was a small waterfall and a pool full of tadpoles.

The valley further down, the stream isn't as full as it has been, neither is the waterfall.
Nymphes is just a few miles/ kilometers from Roda and is named after the nymphs of the waterfall. There is a large village and a couple of tavernas, not open when we were there.

people go to Nymfes to see the waterfall but not many seem to know about the fantastic old monastery that is on the outskirts of the village. There is as tree there which is rumoured to have self-combusted and the monastery itself is well worth the trip. The building is ancient, the old ice cave is still outside where food was kept and the building still has the cells and the gard-du-robe (the ledge the monks sat on to use as a toilet - the waste dripped down the outside wall to the ground). I have never been in a place so peaceful and quiet - beautiful.

The actual working monastery for the North is the monastery of Ag. Triada Klimatia - you can't walk there it's on top of a high hill but well worth a visit - check times it's open - absolutely beautiful place. There were only 2 monks there the last time I visited but the actual chapel is stunning and you can sit quietly and reflect and light a candle - we went to remember a group of close friends who had all died at about the same time over a year Also in Platonas there is a convent you can visit (and support by using their shop) and a fresh water spring where you can fill bottles with the spring water - we did it loads of times- very very fresh water. Nymfes is on top of aquaducts - underground waterways and back in the day the square was where the women did their washing. It's still my home I may not live there any more but still consider it the best place to be. - Oh, and cafe Lois does great meals in the evening!!

Thanks for the information on the monestary and nunnery, I must visit them soon. I think my friend knows the way. I love going into our lovely little church here and just sit after lighting a candle. It is open more in the season, than at other times. I like going up to Zanthates springs to get water, there is an former washing area there as well under cover. In summer the water is so cold coming out of the ground. You usually have the place to yourself and it is so peaceful.
