Is anyone that's going b4 me trying out the Escape card?
So pleased that there's now an ATM down that end of the town - it'll be really handy, if we are taking a card with us, instead of cash.

The interesting thing about quite a lot of these cards are that they are all issused by newcastle Building Society. FairFX Caxto Escape Travelcard to name a few. Their exchange rates are all very similar but they charge different amounts to get hold of your money from ATM's.
Caxton its free Travel cash 1.25% Fairfax 1.50%
don't know about Escape

As Jackie said Kath, this little piggy is sticking with the Nationwide card for now, i know it works in all the a.t.m.'s in the village & i think i've already mentioned, Pedro747 used his in Spain earlier this year & was charged about £9 for drawing out £900. pete.

Hi Pete, yes I remember you saying you were going to stick with your Nationwide card this year (we were too) but I have read on another forum that people have been charged £6+ for withdrawing 300 euros - think I will ask in my Nationwide branch prior to July for a full explanation of all charges (unless you are back before then and can give me chapter and verse).
best wishes, Kath

I think you may have read that on this forum too, Kath. I will withdraw €300 tomorrow, weather permitting, and report back. From memory, it is something like 2% PLUS £1 - equating to 2.2-ish%. Still hard to beat I think, but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise.

Thats very kind of you Steve - will look forward to hearing from you the total cost of getting your 300 euros! I think we will stick with Nationwide but would like to have an idea of the likely cost each time we get out some money.
kind regards, Kath.

I have also been trying to come up with an answer to this question and used the moneysavingexpert.com comparison of various cards. It appears that the Fairfx is the best preloaded card charging £1.50 per withdrawal which would be cheaper than using my nationwide card. I am wary of 'taking risks' with my spending money and wondered if anyone had used this card before or is willing to research it to see if I am missing something blindingly obvious which makes it more expensive or more difficult to use than the nationwide.

What exchange rate do Fairfx offer - with Nationwide you get the interbank rate at the time of withdrawal - at one point today this was at 1.149

This is one concern the website says you get their daily rate but I don't know how this compares to the rate with interbank which is usually good compared with others. The longer your holiday the more this would become an issue. I am also unsure what the maximum withdrawal is in one transaction. Will look more closely at the fx website.

It appears that todays fx rate is 1.099 which probably means the nationwide is still better in the long run. Over to the calculator.

Seem to recall looking at the Fairfx website when they were first mentioned and although their charges are good the lower exchange rate takes the shine of it, think i'll stick with Nationwide for now. pete.
