Many of us have enjoyed shopping at the open-air market in Corfu Town. Anyone from around the island can bring their produce to Town and sell it to locals and visitors alike. There is nothing nicer than finding the freshest of fruit, vegetables and fish and taking them home to create a recipe around them. I remember 'discovering' something called 'ovriez' that looked like samphire. It is a plant which is generally very poisonous, but the young, tender shoots make a delicious vegetable which benefits the urinary system. Only in markets like this can you find such things.
A couple of years ago, the market was moved uphill to the carpark while new, purpose-made buildings were erected. Last year, I noticed that the building work had come to a halt and a vaulted cellar had been uncovered at the bottom end. Well it would appear that this has now been investigated and work will now be completed by June. We look forward to visiting the new market when it opens - in our opinion, the resorts should run day-trips just to the market - it is fantastic.
Don't miss it!

The archaeology is finished and a supplemental loan has been granted so the work on Corfu Town's market can now be completed. Work is expected to resume any day and the market should return to its original site by June.
