I heard this mentioned on "The One Show" on b.b.c last week & as my annual travel insurance is due soon decided to browse the internet to check it out. I found this site - www.protectmyholiday.com ,given my little adventure last year following the collapse of XL, i filled in all my details - name, airline, dates costs and it came back at £6 per person - brilliant i thought, then started to read the small print. It states that scheduled airlines are covered but not whether this includes charter flights, all the airlines that holiday makers use are on their list, Thomas cook. First choice, Jet2, Easy jet etc. They obviously weigh up the solvency of the airline that you are using & charge accordingly - £6 for Thomas cook, at first glance it's very appealing. Does anyone know anymore about this sort of cover ? Pete.

By sheer coincidence the postman has just delivered a reminder from the insurance company that we used last year. They are also offering airline failure cover for as little as £1.25 per person - great i thought, so i phoned them up to renew - the only question i had was " are charter flights covered?" - NO came the reply. Make sure you read the small print before jumping in & wasting your money - better still, get spoken or written confirmation about what is & what is not included. Pete.

This is typical of insurance companies is'nt it. It is more than likely, as we have seen over the last year for charter companies to go under, such as XL, Whizz and about 15 others. No wonder they are not going to offer insurance for charter flights.

Yes Chris, but how many people will jump in & buy it without realising it is no good to them ? pete.

Have just spent an hour trawling through the policy wording on this one & it seems at first glance to be just what is needed, - both charter & scheduled flights are covered, cancellation, cost of extended accommodation and replacement flights are all covered. £4 per person per trip or £8 per person for an annual cover. You will still need normal insurance & some airlines who they consider a bad risk are excluded. Anyone else think it looks OK ? go to www.supplierfailurecover.com Pete.

I have done so, and agree with Pete. I can also remember the Independent Travel Editor, Simon Calder talking about this on a news channel, and he recommended it in light of last years XL and other Charter Airline collapses. It is certainly beneficial for the likes of us using this type of travel, compared to the other that was no good at all.
Regards, Chris

I don't want to make recommendations about Travel Insurance because I am not qualified to do so, but it would seem that, looking at the details given online, the deal offered on SUPPLY FAILURE TRAVEL COVER is about the best one around. It is the same one as is offered on Aldi Travel. Steve

For the sake of £8 each per year i think I'll be using this one - but given my track record you must all make your own decisions. ;D Pete.

Just checking the 'Teleticket' online booking system and they offer 'Supply Failure Cover' for £4 per person. It seems to be getting very popular.

Have just paid for this - £16 for the two of us for annual cover. If you log on to the site it tells you which airlines are NOT included in the cover - this list has grown since the last time i looked at it, better to pay sooner rather than later when more may be added. pete.

That seems like a really good deal Pete, especially after what happened to you last year.
It's just been announced that, following the collapse of 'XL', the Department for Transport are considering changes to the Atol system by incorporating a better explanation of consumer protection in the short term and improved financial protection in the future.

Good , clear , plain english easily understood statements on what is & isn't covered is what is needed, as i said in September, we thought we were covered initially - a.b.t.a & a.t.o.l. trade marks on all our paperwork etc , only to find that because we booked online we were not - still can't figure out why our money wasn't as good as someone's who had booked a package ? pete.

Hi pete, i also booked my xl flight online last year, but i booked through travel republic and not directly with xl.I paid using my debit card and not a credit card,i received my money back in full albeit i had to wait until march for said refund. So glad i paid the atol protection or i would have been scuppered as well.My refund almost paid for his year's holiday.
