..another 'good Greek word', and not something we often discuss on the Forum, but Greek opposition party PASOK, led by George Papandreou, has pledged to cut VAT by 2% for tourism businesses and reduce landing fees at regional airports. Now that would make a difference! It all depends on them getting into power at the next general election and, at the moment, they are leading the polls.

Steve, Do you know yet when the elections are on,I'm all for hopefully cheaper flights if the reductions in landing fees are passed on to Joe public.

If we are looking for some light at the end of the tunnel, Dave, at least it shows that somebody recognises the problem. Corfu deserves special recognition, if only by virtue of the fact that it contributes a disproportionate amount of tax revenue to the Greek state. It pays more and gets less than other regions and this is a very sensitive issue as Corfu is, in the minds of many inhabitants, still independent. One of the things that many visitors recognise is that Corfu is culturally different and, thanks to the treaty signed by the British, the Russians and the French in 1864, Corfu still has the ability to declare itself independent. It is similar to the situation that exists between Britain and the Channel Islands. Perhaps PASOK is after the Corfiot vote.
Does that help, Dave?
