Since we came back to Roda, everybody is saying how cold they are and how fed-up they are with the winter rain. Having recently returned, of course, our view is a little different and, as with everything in this life, it’s all a matter of perspective. Nikos from the Dolphin told us today that, in one night of frost last February, he lost forty lemon trees that will take three years to recover – expensive when you own a fish restaurant. Under the frost when we left Stansted last week, Niko’s trees would have been lost & gone forever. The average minimum night-time temperature forecast for the coming week in Corfu is 100C and in the UK …?
Of course, life in Corfu means more time spent outdoors than it does in northern Europe. More time outdoors and you’re bound to cool down, unless you are sitting having breakfast on a sunny balcony as I did yesterday morning. The locals in Roda are feeling the cold, of course they are, but there are roses and strawberries still in flower, celandines in the streams, geraniums in the garden, narcissi in the olive groves and fluffy yellow mimosa that would blow your mind.
As I wrote this last night, it was raining again and at least two freighters were sheltering in the bay. The wind was howling and the dogs were cuddled up, but we only lit our stove at 7:30pm and we have no other form of heat. It really is a matter of perspective, but there is still time yet for Roda to catch a short snap of northern weather.

We were told the same about the rain two years ago, Dave - at the end of the season, many locals say they can't wait for the winter rain. I've seen the ground more waterlogged than it is now. Better than that white stuff.

Be assured it is worse in the UK today, in particular from a line down the middle of the UK and out to the east. Once again, regardless of the fact that this has been forecast for the best part of a week, the country is at a stand still. No planes, trains, buses, and one that made me laugh was the underground service took a hit also.
Upto 18 inches in some places, with more coming in from now, and throughout the night.
So please do accept the rain in Roda, and/or Corfu, and of course the 10c. Here today is -2c and getting lower into the night.
Yeiamas, Chris

If the spare parts for my camper reach Dave Jackson, the courier, in time - it'll be a miracle. Until then, we're on foot in the rain! Steve

Yes I live in Northumberand too and the forecast led us to believe we would be snowed in - what we got was torrential rain and there is no sign of any snow - all washed away. Another forecast spectactularly wrong!

In Roda, Kath, we are also getting some weather - I'm sitting here with the door wide open, the wind is gusting and howling with a vengeance, the freighters are still sheltering in St George's Bay but it's warm. It's 18 0C in our apartment and when you walk out of the door the temperature goes up by at least 5 0C! It's crazy!! I need to take the ashes out from our stove - there's no chance, I'll be white all over Steve

The gale has gone up a notch now, with swirling spray blowing out to sea like a sandstorm - but the temperature? - still 200C!

I too am looking out of my office window in Newcastle and we are bathed in sunshine - its still a tad nippy outside but its lovely to see the sun ! I would even go so far as to say St James Park even looks less gloomy than of late - but now that we have got rid of our N'somnia things will definitely start to look up lol !
