The Yacht Club has put tables and chairs,in Greek colous, on the beach[in front of the Afrodite Hotel. They do look very inviting. It has been good to see more people using the bar as a lovely chillout place to people watch.

The new coffee place is now open on the main road down to the beach from the crossroads.
I will stop by and sample their coffee and see what else they have on offer.
Roxanne's is now doing a Greek night on a Tuesday with a live Greek band consisting of a girl singer and a couple of men playing bazoukis. It is proving to be very popular with the usual plate smashing and Greek dancing. They also have a chill-out Sunday with a saxophonist playing.

At long last The Brandy Shop is officially open. I passed it twice yesterday aand it was busy with Maria the centre of attention. I think the delay was so that Olga could finish with school for the year and be able to open up. A photo will follow.

Whilst it is sometimes difficult to see what imprivements are being made inside businesses during the winter sometimes you can't help but notice. There are hidden works happening at the Yacht Club with a pile of building rubble appearing outside the building. I have no idea what is happening. The Seaport restaurant also has quite a large pile of similar builders rubble in the restaurant area, but I undersatnd that work is happening on improving the toilets. The Coral Hotel has had concrete mixers and rubble tubes from the top floor for a few days now. The one big improvement you can see is that the balconies on the second floor now have lovely glass fronts replacing the concrete walls. Guests will now be able to sit and see the lovely views without having to stand. There ia an almost constant background noise of work happening in and around the village, joining the sound of chain saws doing essential pruning of the olives. It is not noisy or intrusive, just a constant hum of activity.

My friend and I decided to have coffee this morning in Coffee Cat, such a pretty little cafe, where we enjoyed a very reasonable double cappuccino and some homemade, by the owner, festive biscuits (melomakarona and kourabiedes). I decided to walk along the lane passing the Elizabth apartments. There was some serious work going on, with some rooms having had doors and windows removed and the other block with work also going on with doors and windows open. I could also hear walls being sandpapered ready for painting at the Coral.

I have been noticing the work being carried out at the Coral Hotel. The first lot being the glass balconies replacing the brick walls on the top floor. A rubble chute was in place from the topmost floor. When I returned from the UK there was lots scaffolding on the side of the hotel. I can see new extraction chimney from the kitchens in place and windows being altered on the higher floors. There have been so many vans parked up there must be a horde of workers beavering away. I learnt today that the hotel is being turned into a four-star hotel from its present rating of three star. This involves many modifications and upgrading of all 55 bathrooms and bedrooms. Hopefully I can get a preview before it opens.

I had a walk around the village this morning on the way to and from meeting a friend for coffee at Coffee Cat, such a nice place for coffee with the tables having little posies of spring flowers on them, and Spiros always gives us a small treat to go with our drink. The Coral continues to have work being done; the photo I took today shows insulating blocks being added to the external side wall of the building. I understand there was a problem the pool extension with ancient artifacts found which will need investigation.
Work seems to have stopped at Elizabeth, with the new works being hidden by existing doors. There were sounds of work and rubbing down of paintwork as I passed by the Fiona Apartments today. Floyd was busy painting with almost the same amount of paint on him as on the woodwork. He has changed the ramp, which is now on the side and much gentler. He demonstrated with a wheelchair he had borrowed. The steep ramp has been replaced with a couple of steps, so no more being forced to run down the ramp, either into his arms (he wished) or the passing traffic. The decking is being replaced after 4 years of heavy traffic.
Down the alley the former cocktail bar, The Maze, has been gutted with roof doors and windows going into a lorry. I understand it is being turned into a holiday let.
Yammas opposite Kalamaki is doing very well with the food being sold out usually by 3pm, and I’m getting good reports that it is very tasty and with generous portions. The former paper shop next door is being turned into a Bakery I have been told, and there is something happening at the former burger bar on the crossroads corner.
The seafront by the Aphrodite is looking very bare after the palm trees were removed due to them dying from the palm weevil.

I know it isn’t Roda but close enough. We walked past the former Amarossa Hotel which has been reduced to bare brickwork with doors window, plaster and electrics all removed, also bathrooms, aircon and all the normal trappings of a hotel room. I have been led to believe that the owners of Restia Suites have bought it with the plan to turn it into a five star all inclusive. There is an enormous amount of work to be done. The land next door has been cleared and apparently has been bought by the same people.
Also, in Acharavi the former Acharavi Park has also be taken back to bare brick and is in the process of being remodelled. Still in Acharavi, Bubbles the laundry firm are going to open a self-service laundrette next to Ilo Ilo, the washers and dryers are in place and the work looks almost finished. I can see them being well used.

The village is a hive of activity with the season fast approaching. Sunriders and Topgear have got all the scooters, quads, bikes etc ready for rental. The restauarants are finishing off their final preparation with tables in place just waiting for the final clean up. The boys at Nikos Family taverna were refreshing the white paint on the pavement in front as I went passed last night. I expect today it will be decorated with paw prints from the feral cats. Alexandros in the village were getting there canopies organised and Crusoes and the Harbour bar getting tables and sunbeds ready. The Dolphin looked ready to open, and very pretty with the lights Floyd had put up this year. The pool is filled at Theodoros, and the gardens tidied and fresh flowers planted. The Coral Hotel has painted the renoveted front part a traditional deep brick red, and I can see tables and chairs just waiting to be organised. The Ammos Grill room has its signs up and again tables just waiting for their first customers. The seasonal supermarkets and tourist shops are busy getting their fresh stock in. There does seem to be a bit of a debate as to when businesses will be opening. I expect some will open around the 1st. and others may wait until after the Easter weekenad and open on the 6th.

The lights are on every night now when I pass by the Coral Hotel as they finalise the refurbishment of the hotel. Some people have commented negatively about the new colour, but it is a traditional colour, even if a lot darker than the original.
I had a quick chat with Jon at The Boathouse and he hopes to open before Easter, and I heard that Skouna is opening on the 6th May. This day seems to be the one when the majority of package holiday companies officially start the season. We have had a few hotel open and having good occupation rates, but they do tend to be the all inclusives, and some restauarants near them have opened to take advantage of any passing trade. These have been mostly to the east of Roda, and I've not heard that Roda Beach is open.
I am going for a walk around the village today to see if I can find out any more information about Roda Park, Nikos, Roxannes etc.and I will pass it on tomorrow.

I had my walk around the village yesterday and can report that Niko's Family Taverna opened the day before yesterday, and Roxannes opens today. All the other restaurants look to be on the brink of opening. Easter being so late this year is causing the late opening of some places as it is an important time for family. I will put up the Easter opening hours tomorrow, but they will only affect the big supermarkets and not those in the resorts.
So a bit of a round up for today 1st the following places are open. Pirates, bar and restaurant Roxannes bar and restaurant Oscars bar, no food just yet Agrillia restaurant Crazy Forks restaurant Seaport restaurant Dolphin taverna from 2nd May Dimitris Grill Room Kalamaki Grill room Drosia restuarant Thorntree Bar daytime light snacks Coffee Cat Coffee, tea, pies, sandwiches Red Chilli Indian Restaurant Straw Hat Coffee bar Tropican Bar and light food Nemo Bar, coffee and light food Rodomylos bakery and coffee Yammas takeaway food Yummies pancakes and waffles open at weekends
