Recently there have been two deaths associated with the village. The first is Eustathio Yiovarthi who was 88 years old and lived in Episkepsi when not at the Silver Beach Hotel, so some of you would have known him. The other is the very sad loss of Thodori Psarra at 33 years old, who was a friend of Harris and Demetris from Skouna and was sometimes associated with the bar. He came from Xanthates and was buried there. I apologise if I have mis-translated the Greek names into English.

I am sad to have to let you know that Anne who did the bingo at Big Bens and Oscars in the winter has succumbed to COPD and passed away. She will be buried in the British cemetery next to her husband Les. Her friends are raising a glass to her tonight at 8pm UK time in her memory.

I've just heard the awful news that Costas from Roxannes has died suddenly from a heart attack. A young man in his thirties playing with his young son. I feel as though I've known him for as long as I've been coming to Roda. His family must be devastated. Rip Costas.

It was the funeral of Kostas from Roxannes yesterday afternoon at Karousades. He will be greatly missed from the village. I am sure we all feel for his widow Sanna and their little 3 year old boy. Sanna's family were unable to come to Corfu for the funeral because of the covid restrictions.
I must apologise for some mis-information. The tiny grave in the Sfakera cemetery is not of that little disabled boy I spoke of but his baby brother who had had the same condition, Nike put me right when we chatted yesterday. Nike was really upset about all three deaths that we have had in the village recently. Niko seems to be more affected by his dementia as I usually get a welcome from him, but yesterday nothing, so sad.

Yesterday afternoon I went to the funeral of Lola at our lovely St George's church. The covid restrictions meant that only close family were allowed into the church, but I had only meant to stay in the courtyard anyway to express my condolences. There was a very good turn out with many people I knew, or even just knew their faces. There was only myself and another English lady (I am so bad with names) she is the daughter-in-law of the man who lives between The Boathouse and Lola. She let me know why Lola had a white hearse, which was because Lola was a spinster, so as an unmarried woman she got the white hearse. Children get the same white hearse as well. After the cortege walked up the road towards the crossroads and the cemetery I took the opportunity to light candles for Steve and the recently deceased Kostas from Roxannes, I also said a little prayer for the Albanian baby who has also recently.

I know many of you have visited the British Cemetery in Corfu town, a beautiful oasis of calm in the middle of the city. It abounds with beautiful plants and tortoises all lovingly tended with great pride by the inimitable George. Well, it has been reported that George has sadly passed away. He always showed visitors to the cemetery is reserved plot. He lived in the little house at the entrance to the cemetery. If you have never visited I strongly urge you to go and spend time wandering around it. There are many interesting graves not only of British people but many of other nations. The grounds were always beautifully tended and abounding with flowers. When I went there there were great swathes of flowering agapanthus.

I am so sad to report the death at 75 years of Brian Morrow, husband of Linda, after a short illness. He was such a well known character in the village, more often to be found at Pirates in the afternoon before the restrictions took hold. His wife, Linda, is also very well known not only to the people in the village but to many visitors who loved her cakes and pies which she sold to raise money for the Smile of a Child orphanage in the north of Corfu. There is so much that I will miss about Brian, his banter, seeing him out and about on his quad when he went to do his shopping for Linda and to buy his English newspaper, which always seemed to take all day for him to read. Steve and Brian always enjoyed winding each other up, in the nicest possible way. Pirates will not be the same without him.

The funeral of Brian Morrow will take place in St George's here in Roda at 12 mid-day, after the cortege passing Pirates at 11.45am. Burial will be in the cemetery at Sfakera, where he will be joining my Steve and Shirley's Johno. We will be raising a glass in Brian's memory at 7pm UK time, 9pm out here. Sadly in between Johno and Brian is a baby who I'm told passed away due to Covid.

Today we said goodbye to Brian Morrow at the beautiful church of St George in the village. There was a good crowd of people gathered at Pirates waiting for his coffin to make his final journey there. The Pirates family had laid out his usual table with his drink, glass , reserved sign and his newspaper. There was a short service in the church with Kostas Banos from Pirates ringing the bells as Brian left. His widow Linda was overcome by it all but so pleased that there was a good crowd to see her beloved Brian off. What was a lovely touch was that Kostas placed a glass and a can of Guinness on the coffin to be buried with Brian. There was a time to reflect as the song 'Amazing shade of pale' was played.

Today is the first anniversary of laying Steve to rest in Sfakera cemetery after a lovely service in the little church of St George's in Roda. An equally long and short year.
