Yesterday was the last game until the New Year, the rains stopped and we had sunny intervals at Nymphes as Sfakera hosted Aphes, a team relegated from the above league ladt season. Jonathan still injured, Martinis Spiros in uk and several suspensions left Sfakera needing to call on old players who no longer feature regularly.
Ko at 11am and the attendance maxed at 31. Sfakera had the better of the early exchanges, a shot across goal by Eddie just scrape far post, the a deep free kick was punched by goalkeeper onto head of Sfakera fullback and cleared off the line for a corner. However following a foul and yellow card Aphes put the free kick into the box, with the sun in the defenders faces, Nikos fumbled his attempt to gather the ball leaving a striker with simple headed goal, 0-1 in 22nd minute. The visitors were utilising a good long throw, causing problems due to lack of height in Sfakera defence, they showed great fitness to diuble up in defence to stiffle the Sfakera attack. On 37 minutes Aphes pass ball to player offside, everyone stopped but he didnt touch ball, the passing player then ran onto his own pass rounded goalkeeper to score 0-2. There was clearly interference by the offside player but the linesman didn't flag and the referee didn't whistle so Sfajera have themselves to blame, they must play on if no whistle. This set back put heads down and in 41st minute a long throw was legt to bounce in box, Nikos slow to come and striker head over him to give Aphes a 3-0 lead at HT.
The 2nd half began with a Sfakera substitution. Sfakera started brightly going close in the 46th minute following a corner. In the 56th minute two Sfakera players failed to either win a tackle or kick clear and the ball broke to leave Aphes 1 on 1, Nikos got his fingers to the shot but failed to prevent the goal 0-4. Sfakera try to oush forward at Aphes sat back but shots were high or wide, one ling shot by Rizzo seemrd to be tipped for corner but as goal kick given mush have hit bar. Shortly after in 73rd minute Aphes hit post with Nikos well beaten. 2 more Sfakera substitutions and 4 by Aphes but chances were missed at both ends, Sfakera did hit the bar in the 86th with a shot following a corner and Aphes when 4 attackers on 2 defenders managed to shoot wide i the last minute. FT 0-4.
Clearly going into the 2nd half of the season Sfakera need to keep the nucleus of the team fit, free from suspensions and available if they are to make a top four finish.

The first game after the festive season was away to a team who play at Perivoli down near to Kavos. Such a long trip at this time of year and with several players still suspended meant that Sfakera just managed to put a team together and lost the game 3-0.
As you can guess from this summary i was not at this game.

Today at a chilly, cloudy Nymphes, with a light breeze and the odd sunny interval 15 hardy souls watched Sfakera play Ag Athanasios with an 11am ko.
Sfakera again were missing several players including Eri (inj) a nd Eddie. Odd seset up with Leddi, usual central defence, playing up front.
The game started quickly with the visitors having a free kick deflected for a corner which Nikos punched clear, Sfakera broke away and Leddi shot wide. In the 5th minute Sfakera had a great chance following a corner, the ball played across goal, grabbed by goalkeeper with 2 Sfakera players behind waiting on a tap in. In the 11th the linesman played on a clear offside but Risso got back to get a foot in to stop the visitors taking the lead. On 15 minutes Sfakera had a shot blocked, 2 minutes later Nikos punched out a free kick by the visitors whose follow up shot was high over the bar. On 19 minutes the referee overruled his linesman to give the visitors a throw when the linesman was correct! On 21 minutes it became a bit heated and Leddi and a visitor were shown yellow. Shortly aftr a bad foul by a visiting player but no card - odd! Sfakera had a few half chances, a deep free kick just too long, a long shot tipped for a corner. Then in 29th minute another inswinging corner by Costas to the near post resulted in a goal, probably an own goal by the goalkeeper but my view blocked by players. The visitors attacked, a 30 yard free kick blocked for a corner. On 40 minutes a foul, everyone stop but ref plays on, but then again he played on several times, play broke down even within a second but he never went back to give free kick, poor but at least consistently so. In the last 5 minutes Sfakera had couple good attacks, 1st not drop for clean shot, 2nd they shot from 40 yards when a pass was the better option. Sfakera were awarded a free kick on edge of box, defender kicked ball over fence off pitch, no card! HT 1-0 to Sfakera.
Sfakera substitution, Christos on wing off, Stathis on in defence, Pano move up front, Leddi to midfield. Early pressure and corners for visitors, one following a fine save by Nikos. Sfakera change, move Leddi to defence and Vasso to midfield (this gave Sfakera best set up of game imo). Chances for Sfakera followed, Panos head wide, Costas drill over. In 58th nice pass Costas to Yiannis whose shot handled. Penalty, Yiannis scored after delay for yellow card, 2-0 Sfakera. In the 62nd minute visitors shoot at goal from free kick 38 yards out, Nikos was alert enough to tip over for a corner. More good play from Sfakera followed, Pano good skill to create a chance but his shot was just wide, another shot saved then a chance blocked for a corner, followed by a shot over the bar. On 72 minutes Pano just offside, visitors counter but shoot wide. Sfakera take Pano off, bring on Martinos who went to midfield with Yiannis going up front. Shortly after Risso, now on wing, had a shot from a tight angle saved at foot of post. Jonathan then had a header wide under pressure as did Risso. Entering the ladt 10 minutes, Yiannis had a lobbed shot tipped by goalkeeper for a corner, Costas again inswing, goalkeeper got touch before ball hit back post, follow up shot high over as was next chance. Following a Sfakera corner the visitors broke but the final cross was too far in front of the striker. Vasso now in midfield had a fine shot tipped for a corner, the ball half cleared and Alex shot high over. In 88th Risso broke down wing to bye line, cross ball. Costas at far side hadnt reacted to attack and moved into box, the ball was loose as goalkeeper couldnt reach it, open goal had Costas been there, time he did he could only hit the post with his shot. At 90 minutes approached Sfakera sub Costas and sub went into midfield. Immediately after a great ball by Risdo to Yiannis whose shot was saved. On 90 minutes a 20 yarder by the visitors hit the bar, follow up wide. There was still time for Sfakera to make another substitution but as soon as play restarted the referee blew for time.
Result, Sfakera win 2-0.

Yesterday saw the short trip to Kassioppi on a grey afternoon with light sea breeze to play the improving Zeus who became the only team to beat the league leaders last weekend. Sfakera still without the injured Eri lost Jonathan to injury in the warm up. No Stathis or Christos but a strong team with some older experienced players. An expectant noisy crowd in excess of 100, accompanied by a large drum, settled for the 3pm ko. The first halfchance came Sfakera's way in the 4th mi ute when Pano nodded down a cross but there was no support. Sfakera settled with a deep midfielder sat just in front of the back 4. Following a free kick kn the 9th, a deflection put Costas through on goal but he delayed geting a shot away and the ball was cleared. Zeus attack down the right by Nikos essily gathers the cross, but in the 16th a header beat himonly to come back off the bar and be cleared. In the 19th minute Lee went off with a hamstring injury, shortly after Costas booked for dissent, then Alex for a foul, and then Vasso for a foul. Zeus are a team of teatrics and simulation as we learnt from the first game earlyin the season and the refere often over reacted to minor fouls. However in using those tactics it broke up play and in doing so Zeus lost their main advantage of younger faster players. On 33 Zeus had a free kick 28 yards out but blasted well over. A Zeus break saw a gret tackle by Sfakera no 2, who set Rizzo free down wing, hegot in a cross but again there was no support in the centre. Zeus put a half chance into the side netting on36 minutes. Two minutes later a Sfakera corner was well caught by the goalkeeper. On 42 Sfakera break and Yannis on wing shot over. A minute later and a long free kick from deep in defence by Sfakera was headed on by Pano, Yannis burst through and rifled home, 1-0 to Sfakera. The lead was nearly extended on the stroke of half time when another long ball saw the Zeus goalkeeper make a diving header outside his box to deny Yannis. HT 1-0 to Sfakera. Ten seconds into the 2nd half a booking to Zeus, whohad made a half time substitution. Zeus attack but shoot wide. On 48 Sfakera broke, looked offside but play on, theshot well saved. Two minuteslaterfollowing a Zeus corner the referee awarded a penalty, very soft decision in my opinion. 1-1. Pano was booked for contesting the decision. In the 53rd a booking for Sfakera no 2, again a very harsh decision. My notes on 54 mi utes say referee is losing control and needs to get it back! Just 1 minute later a foul on Costas, who apparently swore atthe offender. A 2nd yellow and Sfakera down to 10. Another booking, this time to Zeus followed. Zeus push forward withextra player but Nikos save well, then the shoot wide. A Sfakera break but Pano offside. Zeus substitution on 64, a Sfakera corner hit too deep, another booking to Zeus. On70 Zeus head wide, a minute later a nasty piece of attempted deceipt bythe Zeus no 9 failed to win another penalty, but no caution for his simulation. A great through ball by Pano was just a couple yards ahead of Rizzo, a resulting throw, Sfakera in box but theshot was deflected and cleared. On 78 another booking to Zeus for dissent. In the 79th minute Zeus attack, cross, great interception by Nikos in goal, clears quickly and suddenly Yannis chasing towards goal, gets therefirst, lobs goalkeeper and the ball dropped inside thefar post. 2-1 to 10 man Sfakera. On 81 the ball was wacked into Alex midriff from two yards, referee gave free kick for handball ! Sfakera cleared the fre kick and broke quickly but Rizzo offside, Pano query and was booked, his 2nd yellow so Sfakera down to 9 men with 9 minutes plus added time to play. Sfakera one upfront, with 3 in front of a back 4 restricted Zeus to long range shots, all well wide. On 86 a breakawaý by Sfakera but they shot high and wide, goal kick bad foul b Zeus no 8, 2nd yellow and off. 9 v 10 now, Sfakera keep it tight. In 89th Sfakera make a substitution. Three minutes added during which Zeus fire two shots well wide. FT 2-1 to Sfakera a d jubilant celebrations by the team. A great team performance and result to be 4th in the league. Sfakera are at home at Nymphes 11am Sunday 28th January

I mentioned at end December the need to improve discipline to avoid suspensions, but yesterday the team was again depleated, Costas and Pano suspended, Eri and Jonathan injured. The game against Potomos played in glorios sunshine, though the goal at the waterfall end was in shade, with an 11am ko.
A lively start saw Sfakera get a 1st minute corner, the goalkeeper punched but Sfakera shoot, deflected and cleared of the line. Then in the 6th minute Potamos had a great chance but fired over from 6 metres. As the half progressed Sfakera had a couple chances wide but were constantly being caught offside (mind you a few of the decisions were clearly wrong). In the 20th minute a poor cross was cleared when Sfakera had two players nicely placed in the box. In the next attack Yannis found himself in space and curled a 20 metre shot round the keeper to give Sfakera the lead. Several more offsides wither side of a great breakaway foiled in the penalty area by a great tackle. From the 30th minute Potamos had a good spell, a shot saved, two more wide then somehow they shot over the bar from just 2 metres when a cross found its way to the back post. More offsides thena chance for Sfakera, a shot by Yannis tipped away by goalkeeper, Rizzo following up curled his shot over. 3 minutes added., only delays had been for replacement balls when one kicked over fence. HT 1-0 Sfakera.
1st hslf, offsides, Sfakera 10, Potamos 2. !
The 2nd half began with Potamos offside! Their next attach saw Nikos catch the cross. In the 51st they fire a 32metre free kick well over, Sfakera repeated that in the 54th. Two more attacks by Potamos, both saw poor punches from Nikos, first scrambled clear, second he crashed into Leddi who needed treatment. In the 60th a Sfakera break and shot from 18 metres that was just wide. In 64th a cross over goalkeeper but just too high for the Sfakera player at the back post. On 65 minutes Potamos fired in a long shot which hit the bar, the player following up was offside. Sfakera mafe a substitution. In the 70th again Nikos call for ball but failedto hold catch, it was cleared and Sfakera broke to get a corner, an inswinger that the goalkeeper tipped over, from the next corner a shot went high and wide. Potamis kept pushing, 2 blocked shots and a third fired over. In the 76th Sfakera break, good cross found Rizzo 3 metres out but somehow ball hit the bar and the goalkeeper saved the follow up. This was followed by Sfakera's 12th offside of the match. Potamos equalised in the 80th, a harsh free kick, 23 metres out centrally was curled round wall beating Nikos at the post. The referee then had a poor spell, ignoring obvious fouls, this resulted in tempers becoming frayed and little arguments - sadly Sfakera were to suffer. Vasso badly fouled, he verbally abuse the offender and was sent off. Potamos fire a long shot in 87th, Nikos managed to tip it onto bar and over for a corner but injured knee on falling. He gravely carried on. Potamos tried to take advantage of extra player but had shots blocked as added time approached. In 92nd they fired high and wide. 93rd Sfakera shoot wide. In 95th Sfakera break, shoot and goalkeeper clear for throw, a corner resultsand the ball finds its way to Costas 28 metres out to the left side, he fired in a shot that the goalkeeper superbly tipped for a corner. The referee blew for time before it could be taken.
FT 1-1. Sfakera remain 4th, but the teams behind are closing in.

Yesterday 30 spectators gathered at Nymphes on a chilly, grey, windy and wet morning for the 11am ko between Sfakera and PAOK. Sfakera still missing some key players but Jonathan and Pano were back.
Early play saw PAOK making very physical challenges with the referee playing advantage rather than punish. The first chance came Sfakera's way in the 8th minute whe n a free kick was headed by Pano but Yiannis shot over. Two minutes later handball against Alex just outside box (ridiculous decision by referee as Alex was barely 1 metre from the player whose shot he was blocking), shot at Nikos, poor punch, follow up header that Nikos saved. 14th minute, Yiannis yellow card for dissent. Two minutes later a free kick to Sfakera, just a few metres in from the touchline, Costas swing it high into box and it went over everyine including the goalkeeper dropping into the top far corner of the goal, 1-0 Sfakera. Following a PAOK corner, the young winger of Sfakera broke away, beat two players but unfortunately his pass forward was just too hard. PAOK then press, a corner they headed wide, a long ball into box that Nikos let bounce but managed to catch as striker challenged. Two free kicks to Sfakera from 35 metres, Pano wide with 1st and Martinos' effort was cleared. PAOK then had the same from 30 metres but hit high over, they followed a minute later with a good chance but shot straight at Nikos. In the 36th minute Sfakera break through the midfield, pass to Yiannis in box, he cut back inside defender and curled in a lovely goal into the far corner, 2-0. PAOK free kick from 25 metres into wall, rebound high over. On 40 minutes PAOK break following poor Sfakera goal kick, a great chance that Jonathan partly blocked that yhen was easily gathered by Nikos. A minute later Martinos miss a shot, the ball went to Pano whose shot was deflected over for a corner, easily cleared. On 43 minutes PAOK swing in free kick, hits striker at back post with Nikos beaten but goes wide. HT 2-0 Sfakera.
An early chance for PAOK but their shot was half blocked and gathered by Nikos. Sfakera then had a corner headed clear, and in 52nd minute midfielder Yiannis sent a high nuts from half way that the retreating goalkeeper caught under his bar, a minute later the attacker Yiannis hit a cross shot which hit the post, Martinos gets rebound but referee adjudge he fouls and yellow cards him. One more shot fro distance by PAOK went high and wide. In the 64th what looked a foul on the Sfakera youngster, was given other way, a comment by Yiannis the striker, and he gets 2nd yellow and is off. (When will the players learn, this has happened far too often this season). Sfakera sub Martinos for Rizzo. As rain gets heavier PAOK try to take advantage of extra man but overhit a free kick, then mess up a dangerous looking break giving Sfakera a goal kick. On 72 minutes a foul in midfield, play on, Pano to Costas but shot high over. PAOK now made a 3rd substitution and Sfakera bring on Stathis for the youngster. 78th minute ball into Sfakera box, 3 players clearly offside but no flag from linesman, fortunately Nikos save the header. On 79 minutes Rizzo offside, still shoots - referee shows yellow (odd he doesnt book for fouls or persistant fouling but does for this). A deep free kick by PAOK well punched clear by Nikos, Sfakera break but pass just too strong for Pano. On the touchline a PAOK player frustrated he let ball out of play, picks it up and hoofs it high over stand into car park - referee shows his inconsistency by not showing yellow! PAOK still push forward, a corner cleared. Then they break into box and Nikos makes a superb double save, first with outstretched leg to deflect goal bound shot then to block for a corner the follow up when it looked odds on a goal would be scored. From the corner a header, Nikos catch under pressure, hurts leg on landing. 89th minute and Sfakera substitution, Costas off. As we entered added time, PAOK swing in free kick but foul on Nikos. In 92nd Sfakera break, ball somehow goes between two players and Pano clear in box but managed to put his shot just wide. Shortly sfter a corner to Sfakera but the referee blows for time before it is taken.
FT 2-0 to Sfakera who remain 4th.
There is a game midweek as no matches next weekend due to Carnivals around the Island.

Yesterday Sfakera hosted Sinarades at Nymphes where is was a lovely sunny day with a swirling wind coming from the hills behind the Stand. KO at 11.30am.
In the 5th minute Sfakera won a free kick on theright corner of the penalty area, the cross gathered by the goalkeeper. Just a minute later Sfakera attack and Yiannis falls in the box, play on - he clearly must have said something as the referee stopped the game and sent him off. It took a while for Sfakera to reorganise but fortunately Sinarades shooting was wayward or high. The twice they were on target, onenhit Jonathan in face going for a corner and other was tipped over by Nikos for another corner. Sfakera had few chances, one following a part cleared free kick was blasted high over, another resulted in a collision between the goalkeeper and the other Yiannis with both players needing treatment by the doctor. Finally in 39th minute a great move into the area but the shot by the overlapping full back was high and wide. HT 0-0.
During the interval we could here the visiting manager shouting at his team in their changing room, probably about not making use of extra man and poor shot selection when a pass would have been better.
The second half began with Sfakera taking a shot direct from the KO, it bounced tamely wide. Sinarades seemed to be shell shocked from their rollicking and Sfakera dominated possession and took the lead in the 49th minute, Pano to Yiannis, out wide to youngster who cooly placed his shot across the keeper into the goal. Just two minutes later Yiannis played Pano into the area, he turned beating a defender and fired in the far corner, 2-0 to Sfakera. A new arrival would never have guessed it was Sfakera with the 10 men such was their early dominance. In the 54th Sinarades had their chance, ball not cleared, Nikos rush to kick clear, it hits defender but fortunately rolled wide for a corner, headed, punched clear by Nikos. Sinarades had two free kicks from about 27 metres left centre, both were shot over the bar. In between Sfakera substituted the youngster with Lee. In the 62nd minute Nikos made a save from a shot on target, Sfakera broke away, won a free kick. Leddie plays itlong, Pano heads and Yiannis into box where he crashes into both Pano and the goalkeeper, ball lose to Lee but the goalkeeper managed to clear. More tratment for Yiannis. On 69 minutes Lee made a great block tackle on edge of Sfakera box, Sinarades all appeal, showing their frustration game going away from them, referee who played on, then stops game for treatment to the player. Sinarades try to put pressure on but Leddie and Jonathan are controlling centre of defence, dealing with long throws and crosses, few shots are getting through to Nikos, most wide. On 75 minutes a Sinarades midfielder gets clear but instead of passing elects to shoot from 25 metres, well wide. Their next attack saw the shot well blocked and cleared. In the 82nd Yiannis is first to a loose ball, is felled by a bad late challenge, yellow card to Sinarades. The free kick was overhit and gathered by the goalkeeper. In the 84th minute Sinarades finally stung together a neat passing move from box to boxresulting in a 16 metre shot past Nikos into bottom corner, 2-1. Yiannis succumbs to his injury and hobbles off, replaced by Stathis. Sfakera then won a corner that was cleared, next a free kick that goalkeeper punches also catching Stathis in head. They attack, their fans call them to stop so Stathis can get treatment, some weren't happy but the referee should have acted as head knock. As 90 minutes approached Pano fired over. There will be added due to treatments, 91st Sinarades get free kick right edge box, Costas yellow card. Sfakera clear, 92 Sfakera break, Leddie rushes forward but goalkeeper intercepts his cross, 93 another break but the shot was wide, 94th Pano was substituted, 95th Sinarades get a chance to shoot but Nikos watches it roll wide. 96th referee blows final whistle.
FT 2-1, great win as 10 men from 6th minute. Up to 3rd in league but big gap to top two, and several teams a point or two behind. Next week away in Lefkimmi to Dragotina while the top two play each other.

Yesterday Sfakera hosted Ag Nicholas at a sunny Nymphes in front of 43 spectators. Plenty cloud around and a light wind. Costas in goal for the injured Nikos. KO 3.30pm.
In the 5th minute Ag Nicholas had the 1st shot, blocked by Costas they shot the rebound high over. In the 8th Sfakera attacked, Pano tried a long shot, the goalkeeper got a touch, the ball hit the bar and was cleared. In the 14th as the players await a free kick to Sfakera, Vasso falls to floor, incident not seen by me or referee, the free kick was cleared. Two minutes later Vasso shown yellow, reacting to a challenge. Ag Nicholas has couple shots wide then in 24th a cross is headed into goal, offside. A corner in the 26th, a rebound into the hands of Costas, in the 32nd Ag Nicholas send in a freekick from 40 metres, everyone miss it and it goes for goal kick. A freekick for Sfakera from 35 metres by Eddie was blocked, his effort from rebound well wide. Shortly after a Sfakera corner, partly cleared to edge box, foul. Pano fired the freekick high over. In the 40th Costas not catch a free kick, fortunately the loose ball was shot wide. A minute later a freekick to Sfakera, the young forward head onto Pano whose attempted lob was too high. In the final seconds of the half Ag Nicholas attack, a free player at back of box, Costas blocks shot with foot but he scored from the rebound. HT 1-0 to Ag Nicholas.
In the 1st minute of the second half a free kick by Ag Nicholas was well saved by Costas, but the ball stayed in play, was crossed back into box where a free header made it 2-0. Sfakera attacked but Vassos ot was just over. In the 54th Lee went off injured to be replaced by Martinos. Two minutes later Ag Nicholas shoot, Costas save for corner, which was cleared. Shortly after a good effort by Martinos was blocked. In the 62nd minute Sfakera subbed Costas, Vasso went in goal and Costas (Yummies) came on. In the 69th minute 2 corners to Sfakera, 1st punched away to concede second by goalkeeper, the 2nd saw a header by Jonathan blocked and the ball cleared. This was followed by Sfakera subbing the youngster for Stathis. In the 73rd Pano had a shot on the turn, the goalkeeper tipped it over for a corner, cleared. In the 78th Sfakera attack, cross cleared, goalkeeper catch 2nd attempt and wad given a freekick. Ag Nicholas break, good position but didn't shoot, pass but shot then wide. In the 81st a freekick out wide right to Sfakera, Costas curled in a beauty at the back post, 2-1. Just minutes later ball played to Pano, a great hook shot comes bouncing back off the post with the goalkeeper well beaten, the goalkeeper recovered to save the follow up. Leddie shown yellow on 86 minutes, next minute Sfakera offside, they attack again but goalkeeper gathers the cross. In 90th Ag Nicholas have freekick on edge of D, high and wide. Into added time, Ag Nicholas hit high into olive groves to waste time, then they get freekick, Yiannis booked. Ball was cleared. Odd last minute, Ag Nicholas freekick, they 4 in box but Sfakera leave 4 on halfway for possible quick counter so Ag Nicholas had 6 back. There was a big gap in between. Freekick was cleared and referee blew for time.
FT, 2-1 to Ag Nicholas who remain 2nd. Sfakera are 5th, 1 point behind 4th but only 5 points ahead of 9th. Play two of teams above them in next games.
Sfakera were unlucky not to get a draw today, twice being denied by the woodwork.

To keep up with the goings on in the Greek Super League, and add a little humour a well known Sfakera fan did his impression of Savvidias of PAOK, but didn't go onto the pitch to check height and width of goals to demand shots that hit wookwork were in fact goals as measurements wrong!!
