Not a 'fainomeno' - more of a natural disaster. This was the hillside high above Acharavi last night as a fire raged out of control near the village of Lafki. It seems to be over this morning as the fire 'planes arrived at first light.

i have been watching the helicopter dousing the area this morning, and am amazed at just how much water it can hold! sincerely hope that no one has been injured or properties damaged in the fire.

..and the drama continues. Visitors are reminded of the ongoing crisis high above Acharavi as a single helicopter now shuttles back and to from Almiros to the mountainside. The air is hazy and full of smoke so it is difficult to take good photos. Fortunately there is no wind at the moment, but I would guess that the threat will come this afternoon as the normal breezes pick up for a couple of hours. It is impossible to see how much land is affected as the fire has spread out of sight. In one photo you can see the radio mast directly behind the fire. Taking a direct line of sight from Roda, and assuming the fire is above road level at Lafki, then there should not be any villages threatened when the north-westerly picks up later. It would seem that the fire is at the edge of the 'olive line', the contour above which it becomes mainly scrubland. Of course, I may be wrong! These photos were taken half an hour ago. I wonder who pays this guy's insurance policy?

It's just after mid-day and, for the first time this morning, the skies are quiet. The helicopter has gone - maybe for a change of crew and more fuel. Time will tell.

I live a little to one side of where the fire happened and have friends who live just above it on the Pantocrator hillside who have been past the area this morning. the seat of the fire was between Trimodi and Eriva, a little higher than Lafki.
The fire started well before midnight last night and is still being doused down now. Watching it expand last night even from the safe distance we were at was truly frightening. The flames and smoke formed a halo over the hillside and seemed to grow by the minute! Thankfully it was well away from human habitation and I understand no one has been hurt.

Scrub fires like this move with a speed that is truly terrifying. I was involved in 'beating-out' fires on a gorse moor some years ago and I was amazed that a fire could spread where there was no apparent combustibles left. I hope that there were no injuries and that the beautiful green hillside returns to its natural quickly (as did the gorse ).

These sort of fires get so hot that most do not realise unless one is fire fighter that the heat, will travel red hot under ground, and then rise to the surface again, even on areas already burnt. In such areas there is so much vegitation, roots under ground. All though frightening, it is amazing how it happens.

Thanks for telling us the location Belinda - looking now at the map, that exactly on a line drawn between Roda and the radio mast on the top of Pantokrator. At about 5:00 pm, the flames flared up again, but they were quickly extinguished by the little spotter planes. There has been a light aircraft circling until about 8:00pm just to make sure nothing starts again tonight.
It is thought there was another fire at Skripero today.

Steve could you send the greek firefighters to my house please to use the water that's in my basement , ever since the waterspout yesterday afternoon?!! I already cleaned it last night at 20.00 h. (about 150 litres) and this afternoon again (another 250 litres I think). I had a look an hour ago ....and there is more (ground-)water coming into my basement again , so more to clean tomorrowmorning I am afraid. So happy that I put all of my things up high since the same problem occured last summer. And who's complaining...... the waterproblems in Pakistan and the fire in Corfu are by far more serious than my small waterproblem...
