I've just been told by a friend resident in Roda that Spiro Walkie Talkie has died - the funeral will be in Athens tomorrow. We have known him for over 30 years and I'm in shock - lots of very happy memories from when he had Walkie Talkie and I'm sure he will be missed. Another of the characters from Roda gone for ever.

Going towards Sfakera - where the old road and the new join before entering the village, on the left hand side was where Walkie Talkie was. It was the original 'open all night' bar and Spiro did food and drinks until the milkman came!! He sold it a few years ago and there is a new building in it's place which I understood was some sort of meat factory but it looked too small when we ventured up there last June - it also looked empty, and actually looked as though it had never been used. Another of Roda's characters, Scottish Davy, the painter and decorator who died a few years ago in Acharavi, had his caravan outside Walkie Talkie for a good couple of years. He hooked up to Spiro's electricity and the arguments were legendary. The er, ladies of the night used to meet there to get some food before going to their 'office' on the way to Karousades. Many many happy memories for John and I - and no doubt for many others.

We didn't know Spiros, but it's always sad when one of the old village characters passes on. The building opposite the Church of Panagia Maria did become a butcher's shop a few years ago but it didn't stay open for long and is now closed. We have heard that there were plans to remove the remains from Roda's tiny cemetery to the newly expanded area around this church.
