We have had very hot & humid weather in Roda for the last month and tonight it broke. For the last hour or so, we have been in the grips of one of the most spectacular tropical storms we can remember since we first came here. The speed with which it picked up was quite unexpected and darkness came early to Corfu. We were sent scurrying around our balcony, collecting vulnerable things, protecting plants, stacking chairs and generally batoning down the hatches. The storm is still circling, but the worst seems to be over. Hopefully, it will all be history in time for tomorrow's busy transfer day and the forecast is good for the next two weeks. Wherever you are travelling from, we hope you have a good journey.

Oh dear Steve
I wondered when the weather was going to break! Rain aside, aren't the storms stunning? As you can guess, there's a motive for my interest in the weather. I'll be heading over in 9 days and Summer in Scotland really isn't worth talking about so please keep ahold of the sun for me.
Give my love to Julie. Hopefully catch up with your at some point.

I'm sure it won't be a problem, Lynda - just a quick spat after a long hot spell. It seems to have gone away now - we look forward to seeing you again.

I have just been told that a yellow yacht sailing from Italy got caught in last night's brief, but ferocious storm. Evidently it is missing somewhere between Italy & Corfu. I can't find any information about it, is there a yachting sleuth out there who can find a report on any of the news channels? A friend told me that the wind was gusting to severe gale force 9.

Problems and damage from the sudden storm in Corfu
Many problems, particularly in North Corfu (Roda) created by heavy storms that struck the island of Corfu in the afternoon of Sunday. The storm caused short-term power failures, and the fire department responded to 30 incidents, mainly for cutting branches of trees and putting out fires caused by lightning. According to the commander of the first fire station, eleven incidents involving falling trees. Fires due to lightning in Liapades. Altogether, 12 vehicles took part with 24 men.
Problems at Sea. Several problems created by the sudden storm at sea, where it took the assistance of the Port Authority forces to counter them. A yacht sailing in the area of Vido, broke its mast causing serious problems for the immediately mobilized Port tug boat who towed the sailboat with two occupants, to Vido and then to the port. In the Harbour, due to the intense weather, the anchor and cables of a passenger ship, broke which resulted in the ship breaking away from the wharf of the Port, and faced another mechanical problem. Finally, the rough seas and the Corfu to INgoumenitsa Ferry obtained mechanical problems, forcing the captain to return the ship to port. After intervention by the shipowner, the passengers boarded the next ferry and sailed to Igoumenitsa.
Sudden storms hit Corfu, after recent heatwaves. This is a common weather practice, which is normally followed by good weather again. The forecast looks good anyway. This story was taken from the Corfu Today, dated 31st August.

My neice, partner and son arrived back from Corfu yesterday, and were somewhat miffed at the severe storms, high winds, and torrential rain they had over the latter part of the weekend and on Monday. During this time flights were diverted to Brindisi and Crete to wait for the bad weather to abate. From the report of the weather taken from the "Corfu Today" for the immediate future it does not look too good, for Corfu and the Ionian Sea.
The rapid change of weather in Corfu has caused major problems both on land and at sea. The Fire Department responded to 5 incidents of fallen trees in Pelekas, Temploni, Kontokali, and Strinila Benitses. A further 4 also responded to pumping out water from homes and stores. Until Tuesday afternoon routes to and from Igoumenitsa by ferry was only by closed vessels.
For Thursday and Friday continues to be cloudy with rain and thunderstorms mainly in the Ionian Sea, the mainland and the eastern Aegean, where the weather will be locally intense. Snow is forecast for Thursday in the mountains of Epirus and western and central Macedonia. The temperature will rise slightly on Friday, but the scene will not change much through Saturday, when bad weather is expected again with heavy rain and storms in the Ionian Sea, western and northern mainland, the islands of the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese. The rest of the country is with temporary transient cloud with local and sporadic rain storms. A short improvement is expected by noon, and from the west, until the latter weeks forecast takes over.

The following report was taken from the Kathimerini today. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection yesterday issued a warning to local authorities that heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are likely to affect much of the country today and tomorrow. The Ionian Sea is expected to be the worst affected with southerly winds forecast to reach 8 or even 9 on the Beaufort scale. Winds are likely to intensify in the central and southern Aegean on Sunday and could affect scheduled passenger ferry itineraries.

Taken from the "Corfu Today". Strong rains and storms are expected by Friday afternoon in the country, with similar weather over the weekend, according to emergency weather bulletin deterioration of CMH. It is expected Friday with severe rain storms in the northern Ionian, Epirus, Western Central, and evening in the southern Ionian Sea and the western Peloponnese. Strong winds are 8 to 9 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea. The Directorate for Civil Protection P.I.N informed all relevant bodies, Prefectures and Municipalities, to be alert, taking all necessary and planned measures to address any potential problems.
