On our news today - it is nearly certain that Thomas Cook are closing their three stores in Dublin due to 'the economic downturn'. I will be watching this one - 7000 employees of the parent company Arcandor, in Germany, demonstrated asking for a government bail out the other day - it was turned down.

The following news article was taken from the online Greek/English newspaper, "The Corfu Today". dated, 17th June 2009. Is it getting worse, or will we see a trend of improvement as the recession holes out, and begins its U Turn. It would be interesting to hear from everyone/anyone visiting Corfu of their views regarding the cost of the recession as far as their holiday goes. What I have seen is some indications of deliberate price increases to compensate for the exchange rate, which in my opinion does not help anyone on both sides of the counter. Give us your views on your retrun.

Concern from the bankrupt parent of Thomas Cook
Concern in tourist circles, the news has caused the bankruptcy of parent company of Thomas CooK. According however to the general fertile HATTA Vas Near this tourist agency operates autonomously with this level of profits without the problem of survival. On the other hand, Mr. Kontos estimated based on surveys of HATTA we should be happy if the season closed with a nationwide decline in traffic of around 10%.
"What matters is that people visiting the island have no money. This is a result of lack of possibility of production capacity in Europe at the level it was told. There is a lack of recycling of money and this creates problems for the tourism. After a good question for completeness 4-5 star hotels in Corfu, Mr Kontos noted that we must take account of these units operate the system all inclusive. "There are even units that have 5-star problem. Prices have dropped significantly but the point is to keep the quality level that provides a categorization of around 4-5 stars.[/i]

Ownership of Thomas Cook has changed after 44% of shares in the company were placed on the London Stock Exchange and snapped up by institutional investors.
A consortium of banks sold their stake in the group that had belonged to former Thomas Cook parent Arcandor, ending a ten year period of German control of the UK’s two biggest travel companies.
The sale should have little impact on Thomas Cook trading and German retailer REWE is still considering the purchase of a further 30% of the company.
