Great idea Jean, why not share your memories of the great strike of '88 with the people who read the magazine but don't join in the forum. You've made a good start already and we only need 200 words or so? Let me know what you think - our deadline is in about three weeks time, published September 1st.

Just thinking about the name Alkinos - Alkinoos was the King of the Phaeacians, the people from Corfu whose daughter, Nausica, supposedly rescued Odysseus when he was washed ashore at Ermones. The King treated him very kindly and helped him to return to his own people in Ithaka. Quite a name to live up to! We have both a Nausica and an Alkinos in the village

Great stories. I remember the Roda Star restaurant. AND when the building above the Newport was apartments - on our first visit, 2 of our party stayed in them.
Newport won't be the same without Costas there this year. Hope he makes a full recovery soon. He's a lovely man.

I agree Jacks it won't. hope you feel better soon Costas. Sadly I haven't really got much of a story to tell but thanks to my friends Viv & Val who invited myself & my mum we've been coming 6 yrs now, so am just a newcomer really, the first year we came there were 11 of us in the party, we stayed at the Gregoris, I think the restaurants were over the moon when we all rolled up. Since then it's mostly always been myself, my mam, viv, val & gail, every year, once twice. I've stayed at the Fiona, Makis & Afroditi, other than that at the appt's above the Splendour bar run by Fanis & Maria, I can honestly say i've never felt so welcome as I do in Roda, the locals greet you like long lost friends & we always have a great time. Hopefully I'll be visiting for years to come Joolsd x

Hi Steve.........yes, happy memories...Christina & Alkinos Scoyros were very kind to us.as I said we stayed at their appartments and also Alkinos brother Dino's, behind The New Port, he was a "character", when he showed us our room, he said "Just one thing, turn the boiler off before you shower"....we thought "Strange" and took No Notice!!, well Tony (hubby) found out why we had toturn the boiler off, whilst in the shower, he bent down (to get to places no one has seen before!) and got an electric shock on the "backside" from the pipes.......Forgot to mention Ya Ya..Christina's mother, she used to sit out the backand we would wave across & say "Yassou" (like you do!!)and she would just nod her head and carry on what she was doing & sometimes she would sit and make small round floor mats,,,wait for it...from Plastic Bags, she gave us 3 to take home and I tell you what, they lasted a long time( lovely pattern on them in different colours................enough.Kaz

Hello jeanp......we were staying at the Studios the time of the strike( I think to do with effluence being pump into sea!!??).........I must say, we were treated well that night,we were allowed Steak or Pizza (which was made in The Roda Star)..people used to go there to take it away, but word got around that they were selling food and a crowd of people came along and told them to stop selling and proceeded to throw the tables & chairs in the sea, by that time some of the tourists came to our room to eat(didn't know them from Adam!!)so there was a crowd of us in there and spilling out on the corridor..I must say, it was very frightening, but soon died down, but the tables & chairs remained in the sea for a couple more days.........didn't put us off from going again, and have been every year since apart from a couple years when we had to stay home to look after my Mother, alas she has passed away and we have started to return in the last 6yrs......feels like we have never been away!!!!yes jeanp, I bet we've passed or dined at the same time as you........we will be there Sept 7th...enjoy yourselves Kaz

Have enjoyed reading everyones tales about Roda,I can remember going to Roda Star when Yannis ans Vangellis both worked there Vangellis hadnt a grey hair in his head,We used to eat at the Roda beach Hotel and walked along to the village after we had eaten,Even though we hadnt ate at the Roda Star we always had a few drinks,Vangellis would shout for us to sit down and have a drink, before we sat down the drinks were on the table,we always got a free tia maria coffee before we moved on to the next bar usually Night Flight,Irene and Spiros used to play music for us,and when Costas was home he used to play the piano and sing Vassilla used to make cocktails for us and do tricks and make us laugh,I could go on forever about our antics in Roda,we have had some laughs over the years, and hundreds of photos that we keep looking at not long to go now....am on the countdown

Loved the Night Flite all those years ago. Irene was super host prior to her accident, and we've had some mega bbq's in the back yard......but ooohhh! those mozzies. Like you said Vassillis (billy) was a great entertainer, we loved it when he danced on the bar making his cocktails. Husband used to go to their house in Karousades and to the garage where Vassillis repaired the tractors. Last I heard Costas was teaching music on the Mainland........ ......oh happy days.......5 more to go and we will be back

Val, you know those hundreds of photographs - well - have you got a scanner? Can you pick just a few of the best and post them on the forum or contact us so that we can do it? This is great - this is what many of the regulars really want to see and what new visitors can dip into! Steve

will sort some pics out and send to you,we have seen many changes over the years,Night Flight (now Vibe)was a great bar,Irene and Spiros were great hosts, greek dancing and music till the very early hours ,the Cheeky Monkey, now where Maggies Bistro is was another great night out,our friend was told to ask for a tequeila slammer,my God,what a laugh, she was given a blue crash helmet with sparklers in,they were lit,she was given the slammer, then hit on the head till she drunk it!!!we ve never laghed so much.Maggies bar was Carusoes and she had Bob from england singing most nights, the atmosphere was wonderful. The mistral bar was Tramps that got closed down by the police, along with the night flight for being too noisy,it was closed on day 3 of our holiday, for 10 days,we were back in Newcastle before it opened again! We ve had wonderful times in Roda and feel like it s our second home, everyone makes you feel welcome ,roll on 24th August
