Right, just booked our hols for this year, we'll be staying in Maki's Apts. What I need to know is, how flexible are the airlines if you go a couple of kilos over the limit. We'll be flying with Jet2 from Newcastle, and have already paid extra to get the 20 Kilo allowance, which should just about cover someones shoes So if anyone has got away with a few extra kilos, or been charged, I (we) would be grateful for any info Thanks Andy

Hi Andy - be very carefull or take your cheque book with you, they have become very strict, last time we flew we saw people being charged, some trying to take stuff out of their cases and having to rejoin the queue - it's just another way for them to make more money out of you. Don't forget that you are allowed 5kgs each in hand luggage. Hope this helps. pete.

Andy,
I have never flown with Jet2 but usually found they are more lenient with various airlines that I have travelled with regards baggage allowance leaving Corfu.
When me & my friend moved back from Corfu after living there for the summer they let us both through free of charge with 2 28 kilo suitcases!! In England however when we flew out to Corfu our suitcases were each other by about 3 kilos and they charged us a fortune.
I would recommend to stay within the limits as best you can though to be on the safe side unless you are willing to pay any excess charges which may arise.

Pete,
Nice to know they have become more strict recently, my friend always likes to have a ridiculously heavy suitcase for no apparent reason!! I will make her aware that she may be made to pay excess fees if she does this in July.
I think we have both become complacent over the years that we have never been charged before, don't really fancy paying excess charges this year though!!

Hi Rach, we had three rows at check-in, on one side of us a couple were charged £35 for being 7 kgs over and on the other side they were charged £40 for 8kgs, we were a couple over but got away with it cos the older man on the desk was too busy talking to notice. When we flew baclk from Venice following the XL Collapse we had a hell of a job getting them to let us off with an excess charge - our xl allowance was 20 kgs but the flight from Venice was only 15, we actually met a young couple who were in the same situation as us , but had been working all summer in Sidari - they had 3 lots of clothes on & were dumping shampoo etc to try to make the weight ! pete.

airports scales are not all 100% correct many vary ive worked as a baggage handler and was told this they are aparantly checked at airports idependantly . always allow yourself at least a kilo to be on safe side i know someone who had to take out some clothes and wear them as they had 20.7 many airlines are very picky these days

They were very strict at manchester, but the biggest surprise was on the return journey at corfu end, i've never known them to look at the scales before but the girl on the desk took a good hard look at the weights, i was told that they were charging 8 euros per kilo if you were over the limit. pete.

If anyone was to be charged 8 euros per kilo, Pete, I wonder who would receive the money - the tour operator or the airport?

My guess would be the tour operators - it's just another con to make money - they used to just put a sticker on the case saying "heavy". pete.

Hello!
Got back from Roda on Monday, travelled with Thomas Cook. On the way out from Gatwick they charged £8 per kilo over and on the way back from Corfu it was 11 Euros per kilo! Be careful we had to pay £96 between us at Gatwick, paid to airline!

Another opportunity to be exploited by the tour operators. So when it suits them, Lucy, Thomas Cook are saying, at 11 euros, the rate is 1.375 euros to the GBP. But they offer 1.06 less commission if you want to change money. Better that your money goes to the village - for 8 euros you can have your clothes laundered at Holiday Wash, travel with less and keep this valuable business alive. HOLIDAY WASH
