What's the old saying ? "take half the clothes and twice the money" - it's never really worked at our house, the better half always made full use of both our 20kgs allowance ! Since the tragic events of 9/11 and the increased security at the airports, we had stopped taking any hand luggage with us - no hassle, no worries about having to give items up etc. It was a case of get rid of the cases at check-in and then relax without toting hand luggage around the departure lounge. Since the airline companies have had to come clean about the cost of a flight ( price + taxes etc.) many of them have started to reduce the baggage allowance to 15 kgs and surprise surprise they are charging exhorbitant prices for you to purchase back the missing 5 kgs ! I for one am sick to the back teeth of rip off britain, so this morning i went out and bought two pieces of hand luggage (within the permitted sizes) which i fully intend to fill with clothing up to the permitted 5kgs per bag. Yes, it means that once again i will have to carry them with me but for me it's one small victory to the customer, and for the wife it's a different outfit every night ! pete.

Thomas Cook are missing a marketing opportunity here, Pete - they should sell luggage scales with their logo on which go into the red zone at 15 kg. - just think of the extra profits for shareholders! - they might even reduce the cost of flights by 5 euros as a gesture! Steve

It's Libra we're going with, flying Monarch. But I'm willing to pay £6.50 each way, for the sheer hell of getting straightners, hairdryer etc with me! lol PLUS all the clothes that I've promised myself I'm not taking this year - but know that I WILL take with me. lol Did I tell you I've already started sorting out holiday clothes? 14 weeks & counting!

Dutch Transavia allows you to take 20 kilo's and another 5 kilos handluggage... and we have a new "tactics"... ;D ;D... when we were bringing Danny to Schiphol last month, my husband didn't go with us to the luggage-check in and he kept Danny's Eastpak with him... The woman at the checkin asked Danny what he was taking and he told her just the laptopbag. His luggage was far too heavy ( he was going to Roda for 11 weeks so he had to bring a lot...) but she allowed Danny to take a bag ,with his suit in it , out of his trunk to take with him as another piece of handluggage.... and we only had to pay for the extra 2 kilos ...instead of 4 and a half... (at a price of 9 euros for every extra kilo) BTW: With Transavia you can always bring a laptopbag along with your handluggage (at no extra costs)

We travelled very light this year due to someone stealing our suitcases before we even drove off to the airport I'm going to ask Steve and Julie tomorrow if i can write a little piece about our experience and to warn fellow travellers of what can happen Needless to say we have boosted Rodas enconomy by having to buy everything here.
