It is thought that there is a proposed scheme to bypass Skripero (the one with the three-minute one-way system) which is one of the major villages en-route to Roda. The contract is worth 7 million euros.

I hope so we were held up there last October en-route to the airport because of an accident, several of the villagers were out trying to move the damaged vehicle.

It used to be nerve racking driving through there before they put up the lights, especially when 2 coaches met head on right in the middle. Mind you it's only just bearable with the lights, Greek drivers seem to develop colour blindness when they approach a red light.

Another scheme that has been planned for many years does seem to have started. You may know the short stretch of dual-carriageway that runs from the Lefkimmi Road, near to the airport and terminates by Lidl. The plan is to continue that across town to meet the Paleokastritsa Road by the Dimitra supermarket and it will make the journey from the airport less circuitous. When we were in town last weekend, the first buildings by Lidl were being demolished.

The 500m stretch of new road extending the airport bypass and making links to the Paleokastritsa Road more straightforward will supposedly be completed by early summer. The hold-up has been caused by the re-siting of electricity pylons. When finished, the new route to the north of the island will shave a few minutes off the trip to Roda by avoiding the confusing section that emerges by the hospital.

As soon as Easter is over, work will intensify on the new 500m stretch of dual carriageway that will extend the airport bypass and shave a few minutes of the journey to Roda. The road is still expected to be operational by June.
