It seemed that the installation of mains drainage was one of the biggest undertakings relating to infrastructure ever seen in Corfu but, yesterday, an even larger decision was taken.
We have always believed that water on Corfu was in plentiful supply and there are places all around the island where it runs freely throughout the year. To our knowledge however, over the last two years, water from Thinali was used to prop up the supply at Kassiopi and it seems that other areas suffer from shortages during peak demand conditions in the hot summer months.
The project is called ‘Water Corfu & Paxos’ and tenders for the 290 million euro contract will be invited in April. It would seem that a significant number of new wells will be drilled paying particular attention to ecological needs. Schemes will be introduced to reduce surface water run-off and additional water storage and treatment facilities will be built to guarantee supply to all areas into the foreseeable future. This is the largest project of its kind ever proposed in Corfu.

We it sounds like a great idea. But will it be done with the usual efficiency to which we have become accustomed???
I have heard a rumor that Roda is penciled in for the installation of the pipes in June?? Please tell me this is a joke???

Not true - and not much of a joke either - work has been ongoing since November and today, the first hole appeared in Roda. If it takes about one week per road to dig, install and backfill each trench, then anyone with a knowledge of Roda can work it out. This is a two-year project and if they haven't finished by May 1st, work should come to an end until the start of next winter. I don't doubt that there will be a lot of activity in the last few hours of April, but that is how I see it.

The water scheme has only just been confirmed, Petra, I have no idea when it is scheduled to start but I doubt that you will find any signs this year.

How will it affect people, will they turn the mains off to do work, should people drink bottled water during this time??

No need for concern, minime - first of all, they are only just considering the contract which means it could be years before they start. Even when they do, I guess that for Roda at least, the infrastructure is already in place. Rarely do we have a problem with water in the village. Most of the work will be in securing extra supplies through boreholes and aquifers. They will also be trying to retain more of the water that runs off into the sea during the winter months. In November, we've seen the whole of St George's Bay turn brown with fresh water and with the trees washed down as well, the whole bay looked like a Canadian logging camp. It's a bit like the UK, really, all that rain and not enough water. Some villages in Corfu are not as well served as Roda and this project will guarantee a good quality and dependable supply for all.
