After more than ten years of delays, it looks as though the new general hospital is on the move again. Work had started when we left in 2008 and we have been told that it will open soon. Locals are more sceptical.

We were told it would be open 'soon' - Greek 'soon' - a bit like 'avrio' which should mean tomorrow, but actually turns out to be 'not today!' Steve

It would appear that 'soon', this time, has a target date! We have heard from someone who is currently visiting the old hospital, that the date set for opening the new one is the end of April this year. As in every other country, this is all dependent on finding sufficient suitably qualified staff for each department.

Is this the one that has stood in Kontokali for years waiting for completion. I know the first time we visited Kontokali some 6 years ago now, it was pointed out that was the new hospital, but it did not change from year to year. ;D ;D ;D

That's the one, Chris, it could make Kontokali quite a busy place in future.

The latest that we have heard is that hospital buildings are due for completion by the end of March, groundworks by the end of June and 400 new jobs will be created.

The wards in the new hospital are almost completed and, courtesy of 'Corfu Today', here is the proof. The completion date would now seem to be June 2009.

The following news article is taken from the online Greek and English newspaper, "The Corfu Today", dated 18th March 2009. It is continual good news being received quite often on the how much the new hospital at Kontokali is progressing. This latest news is big step forward. Lets hope the continual progress keeps moving ahead, and the opening date of end of June still stands at present.
The first licenses for medical equipment for the new Hospital
The decision to start pre-construction radiographers in the new Hospital signed by the Prefect of Corfu Stefanos Poulimenos after application of radiation protection of the Greek Atomic Energy Commission. We drove into Corfu Town yesterday and there was no doubt that work was proceeding at quite a pace on Corfu's new General Hospital. While we were waiting to see someone later, we saw on TV that a snap general election has been called by the Greek Government for 4th October.
Corfu's Minister of Justice, Nikolas Dendias, has subsequently announced that the scheduled opening ceremony for the new hospital will be brought forward by one week as a result. That will make it three weeks from today.
How long it will take for the hospital to become fully operational, remains to be seen.

N. Dendias: A week earlier for the inauguration of the new hospital
The opening ceremony of the new hospital will be moved one week earlier than October 2 in order not to coincide with the dates of elections, said the Ministry of Justice Law Dendias. At a meeting Dendias indicated that previous matters and problems had been solved, allowing the hospital to be finished, and able to operate.
This story is from the "Corfu Today" dated 4th September. It will be great to see the hospital in full swing, rather than the open concrete mass that has been seen by many over recent years. Good luck to the new hospital and its staff.

Tomorrow, Sunday, will see the inauguration of Corfu's new General Hospital, the bulk of which has been standing empty for many years.
Being just one week before the country's general elections, one local taxi driver referred to it as 'the election hospital'.
When the doors are opened for the first time remains to be seen.
