The tourist tax which has been around for a few years now has been changed to an environmental tax by the Greek government to help towards the cost of the wild fires and floods experienced by the country in recent times. This is compulsory and is paid direct to the hotel or accommodation you stay in. The charge is per room/unit in euros per night.

I must mention the reports that have appeared in some press back in the UK, particularly The Mirror, about a supposed outbreak of Whooping Cough on the island and in particularly Paleokastritsa. This has alarmed the tourist council here and after research it was found to be completely false. There is no truth to the report that a child died and more seriously ill. Corfu in fact has an extremely low level of the disease, so please don't be alarmed by these false reports.
I haven't walk right around the village just yet, but have noticed that there is a very busy feel as final preparations are being made before the officail start to the season, though we already have visitors in the village from the few places that have opened early, such as Acharavi Mare. The Drunken Sailor is installing new ladies toilets, and doing some work in the bar area. Leopard travel, NSK and HN travel are open and Sunriders have their scooters etc ready. Mouses dress shop is open and one or two seasonal supermarkets are open. The new bakers at the crossroads is open for business, they also serve coffee. Pixida has a new owner and is now called My Pixida and looks reday to be opening soon. The Red Chilli is open, and Pirates are now fully open with a full menu. Maxis, the new head of the syllagos had organised rubbish and recycling bins around the village, plus got most of the potholes filled in.
Places to eat or get takeaway at the moment are:-
Pirates Red Chilli Demetris Grill Room Kalamaki Grill Room Drossia Yammas The Coffee Cat and the new Bakers for cakes, pastries and coffee.
As soon as exchange rates are put up I will update the information, and from this year I will post the fuel prices.

This morning I went to check out the new bakery (Rodomylos) that has just opened and enjoyed a capiccino in the sun with friends. They have a selection of bread and Greek pastries cooked on the premises, and delicious looking cakes. They also sell, filled rolls, biscuits and icecreams. They can be found in the former Roda Stop building next to Tropicana at the crossroads. A welcome addition to our village eateries.
