Apart from all the wonderful places we saw on our journey, the food was one of the outstanding highlights. To sample everything we saw in the market in Florence, we would need to live in Italy for a couple of years and, of course, you can’t take it with you - well not much of it, anyway!
These are a few of the local specialities we collected on our journey - things to enjoy back here in Roda, and help us remember what we experienced. Starting with Brandade de Morue, a bit like skordalia but with salt cod added, Sobrasada, the Catalan spreading salami, wild rice from the Camargue to remind us of the flamingoes, and Boquerones - oh, the boquerones! They are white anchovy fillets soused in vinegar and we will try to make them ourselves now. We have Catalan anchovies, preserved with oil, olives & peppers, the World’s most famous anchovies from L’Escala, Salsa Calcots, the sauce especially prepared for barbequed spring onions, goats’ cheese from France, red apricot preserve from Rousillon, Colza oil from a farm in Pays d’Othe, made from turnip seed, and the ever-present sundried tomatoes and porcini mushrooms from the market in central Florence.
Well that’s next week’s meals taken care of - what’s next?
