If half of the men in Corfu are named after St Spiridon, you can imagine that today is just about the biggest name day on the Island. The cake shops will have done a bumper business as every Spiros in Corfu will have bought cakes for friends & family. It also marks the start of the Christmas period and everyone remains in festive mood from now until December 26th.
From Rodaonline to all of the Spiro's in Roda and to St Spiridon himself, we wish you 'xronia polla'.

Xronia Polla to all Spiros, and of courst St. Spyridon. I am in a way fortunate to have my birthday on the same day, 12th December. It is ironic that St. Spiridon initially has nothing to do with Corfu. Born in Cyprus, working as a shepherd, he married, and had a daughter. Later St. Spiridon (Spyridon) went in to the monastery, at the same time his daughter went into the convent. After travelling around, and preaching his words and works he returned to his beloved diocese in Tremithous. Here he fell out of favour with the then ruler Maximus, however, St Spiridon died peacefully in old age regardless of this. When the Arabs raided Cyprus, St Spiridons body was moved to Constantinoble (Instanbul). His relics were found to have a sprig of Basil interned with him which was a sign of royalty. In 1453, Constantinople fell to the Turks, Spyridon's relics were removed again; this time, to the island of Corfu by a Corfiot monk called Kalohairetis, where as we all know, they remain to this day. Yeiamas, Chris

Hi Petra
Pipitsa is originally from the Corfiot village of Aspiotis and you will see many others around the island who have the same second name - even one of the doctors we use in Corfu Town. So Pipitsas & Aspioti Pipitsa are one and the same thing. Her apartments are just 20 metres from where we first met you at the FGT.

Thanks for the explanation. Kelly already has plans how to spend her holidays.... she wants to walk your dog and she would like to help Kostas in the kitchen too... nice to hear that Pepitsas is close to RodaPark. I emailed Pepitsa this afternoon to ask about next summer, waiting for her reply. The "boys " (Danny and Gert) want to stay in an appartment with a pool a.s.o. ,so I have emaild Spiros no1 for them. Have to book aeroplanetickets this week too.....
