I know that it's a dangerous occupation photographing military facilities in Greece, but here goes anyway!
Many of us will have heard the radar blip emitted at night by the Scops Owl - well, after almost fifteen years of trying to see & photograph one, I finally got lucky.

That noise is from an owl?! Thanks you've solved the mystery, for years we've sat listening trying to work out where that noise is coming from!

It certainly is, Dan - you can often hear two different notes ... the highest is the male, I think, the low one is the female.

Yes that sounds right... We always assumed it was some sort of radar beacon as the beeps are so regular, but then couldn't work out why sometimes it stopped! Where was that photo taken?

Last year we were sitting in the beer garden at Crusoes (very late) and could hear the distinctive cry and looked all around us - we saw the owl standing on top of a parasol on the beach probably no more than 15 feet away from us - by the time one of us got our camera poised - it flew off - what a sight. Thanks for the photo - Kelly will love it.
best wishes, Kath.

The Scops Owl landed on the electricity wires just 6/7 m from where we were sitting. It was still quite light. My camera was 2m away but I couldn't get to it. After about 5 minutes or so, I decided to try and, of course, the owl flew away ... but only to the pole alongside Nino's where I managed to catch it.

Thanks for the Steve. Of all the years we have been going to Roda I've never heard one or probably not taken much notice so just googled Scops owl call so now I also know what it sounds like and will keep my ears peeled in future and if someone say's whats that noise I can say that's a Eurasian Scops own as if I'm an expert lol.
