.. but not yet, it's still summer! Listening to a conversation yesterday at Yianni & Sandra's Mediterranean supermarket, when Lisa from Smiley's asked Sandra when she would be having her Christmas stock in? 'Another ten days or so, maybe', replied Sandra. Now, bearing in mind that postal service to the UK are a bit slow, that leaves about three weeks to do your shopping. Visit Greece, the birthplace of civilisation!

We live in hope. As you know, here in the UK it is in your face from 1st September. I think the supermarkets are best weather forecasters going. No sooner than the BBQ season is over, they turn to Guy Fawkes and Christmas, no sooner is that over, and it is Spring Clothing and Easter Eggs, and when that is finished, it is back to Summer Holidays and Clothing, then back to BBQ.
Not a sign of it in France on a recent visit. And I cannot remember seeing it in Greece when I visited winter times with the Navy. I might be wrong now.

Hi Chris,
Clearly things are changing in Greece, especially in the places where UK ex-pats are living. However, the change is slow and there is not the 'in-your-face' commercialism that, for many, has taken all of the pleasure out of Christmas in other countries. I have to be careful here not to present too personal a view for fear of offending people but, in a climate of financial constraints, with house prices falling and the pound in the doldrums, I don't understand why we cannot have a simple Christmas, remember what it's all about, spend less, enjoy the company of friends and family who are all in the same boat, and just relax. Such a Christmas would be closer to the Greek 'model' & I believe that even us miserable old **** might find something worth looking forward to.

Hi. I'm not offended. Count me in with the miserable old *****s regarding Christmas. Because it starts so early here, the sense of anticipation has all but vanished. Bring back the good old days! JackieM

Steve, I am, he says loosely, one of those ****s. I do not enjoy Christmas as much as I did years ago, because by the time it comes around in the UK, it has been in your face for nearly 4 months.
I use to love being away in the Navy at Christmas, because it was only on the day it happened. Before and after it was normal duties. Of course if we were alongside, it was a different story and we would join in the fun, but invariably it was only a few weeks before that that place would have started the lead up.
I do like a run up to Christmas, but at my pace. The cooking on Christmas Eve. We join friends on Christmas Day, and then family on Boxing Day. Thankfully we have a weekend to follow, but then back to the grind stone on the Monday.

Christmas is coming to Corfu just as quickly as it is everywhere else, but you wouldn't know by looking at the shops. We walked through Corfu Town today and it didn't hit us at first - there is not one sign of anything Christmassy - anywhere! There are no singing santas or drooping decorations or fancy lights in any of the shops and nothing at all in the streets. It seems that there's plenty of time for all of that nearer the day. Oh, what a relief! Steve

In Holland we have "Sinterklaas" first (Ag. Nikolaos/ St. Nicolas). He is coming over by boat tomorrow, the 5th of december is the day he is giving presents to all the children and on the 6th of december (his birthday) he is leaving for Spain again (that's where he lives). And the first monday after the 6th, we will already be decorating the christmas trees at kellys school. A lot of people over here are complaining about the early time of year the shops start to sell christmas stuff, they want the shopowners to wait for "Sinterklaas to" leave.
