I've just sent a PM to one of our members on the ease of getting to Newcastle Airport even though we live in Scotland. It got me to thinking on how other members get to the Airport that their flight to Corfu leaves from. We travel to Newcastle Airport for several reasons ........ it's cheaper ( flights and Package Holidays ) , more direct ( We don't drive ... ie no car ) so we have less hauling around of cases than we would if we were to fly from Glasgow or Edinburgh !! Our Airports are supposed to be The link to travel, not only abroad, but to other destinations within the UK. I've been to a few Airports around the UK and, to be honest, the travel infrastructure to them is appalling !! How do you get there ....... Have you spent £150 even before you set foot on the 'plane ?? More ?? A cheap flight may be great ....... but if you spend more than the flight to get to the Airport ?? ( and back ) Please feed my curiosity .... or is it paranoia ??

Johno we've tried various airports over the years... we're only 20 minutes drive from Edinburgh but there isn't always the flights available for that and Glasgow is about an hour away with similar draw backs. We found it was a lot cheaper to travel south of the border where flights are so much cheaper. The problem we have is the timing of the flights as they usually require a drive through the night or an airport hotel either on way out or on return. The Newcastle flight gets in late at night and although we did drive home the first year from there, it wasn't the best idea after a long day travelling. We have also flown from Manchester but that required an overnight stay on way out as early morning flight. ( we had children with us on both of these journeys) Both of these were package holidays which is why we have decided to try Gatwick this year flying independently but the problem there is going to be a 9 hour gap between flights into Gatwick from here and out to Corfu. It's not easy weighing it all up!! How do you travel to Newcastle and how easy is it?

You need to then consider how to fill those 9 hours at Gatwick. We had an 8+ hour delay 2 years ago flying from Manchester and all we did all day was "graze" so spent more money and were soooooo bored!
Re the Jet2 from Newcastle - it does arrive back late (around 11pm) but if you book in advance you can get Premier Inns for around £30 per night (just a thought).
regards, Kath

Thanks Kath.. the other problem is its on Monday night which means another day of hubbies holidays out of annual allowance as he would need Tuesday off as well( we're going for 3 weeks next year) where manchester and gatwick do saturday flights so he still has a full week left for break in winter. Looks like occupy ourselves for 9 hours at Gatwick or overnight at Manchester (might be ok if we can do it with parking included)

We, if possible would always fly from Bournemouth Airport, which is only 20 minutes from where we live, and about a fiver in a taxi. However, the Palmair flight we use to use is no longer in operation (Sir Peter Bath would turn in his grave). Thomsonfly, fly out of Bournemouth to our two destinations, Corfu of course, and Majorca, but the flights are much earlier going out, and much later coming back. Ryanair out of Bournemouth does not do Corfu.
In the past we have also, rather than use Gatwick, driven to Bristol. It is only 76 miles by car, so not too expensive on fuel, cheaper parking with some good deals, and cheaper flights using the likes of EasyJet. This, when I am able to fly again (next year hopefully) will be our perferred option.
Gatwick is expensive to get to, whether driving oneself, or using a taxi service. Coaches and trains from Bournemouth do make it awkward to meet up with flights, in particular on return journeys. I remember us coming back late from Majorca some years ago, using a coach for aour return journey from Gatwick to Bournemouth. The coach left at 10pm, we arrived back at 1030pm, and had to wait until 5.30am for the next coach. Not away I would like to finish a holiday.

Can see your problem Vodkalil, flights from 'South' are sooo much cheaper than from Scotland but even having a two hour wait in Gatwick is soul destroying !!! Have you read my Personal Message to you ? For the price of the Airport parking you can book a room in a Travel Lodge for the night ( family room ). Travelling by Train from Edinburgh to Newcastle takes 1 1/2 hours. Newcastle Central to Airport is 45 mins on the Metro. Train tickets, booked well in advance on-line, would be, at present prices , £40 return for two adults. Still want to go to Gatwick ? The North of England may not be our first choice of Airport, but it is possibly the best !!!!
