“Colourful kites dotting the sky” – well they will be today as the wind is up to force 5 and cold with it! It has not abated.
Snow and rain have been forecast for most parts of Greece and the National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued a severe weather warning, which forecasts snow in the early part of the day in the north of the country but this is expected to spread to central Greece later in the day.
"Wrap up!" I hear you shout, but I’m not sure if you care or are being rude. It is not raining, so I will venture out later and make sure my camera is using anti-shake – not so much because any kites will be rather active, but more because I will be shaking & shivering. I’m not sure the sea will be horizontal today – in fact I’m not sure that I will be!
It is great to see Heleni & Yiannis opening up for the day at OPA, and they will have a great selection of fish dishes on offer. I remember that one of their specialities was 'Soupi-es bourthetto' – cuttlefish in a that traditional Corfiot spicy sauce. Greek TV is broadcasting all sorts of recipes for cuttlefish at the moment as it is very much in season at this time of the year and many families will be cooking it today.
Heleni will also have 'Lagana', the most delicious flat sesame bread that is baked just for today - one day each year, and today’s the day. Another speciality will be Macedonian halvas – a delicious sesame treat to accompany all the delicious dishes on offer. Such a shame that customers will have to retreat inside as any sesame bread served outside might follow the kites to Kavos.
Whatever, local families will be enjoying a day in each others' company today - something they do extremely well. They will be mixing the joy of celebrating Mother Nature alongside the more solemn task of starting their long period of lenten fasting. It really is quite a day!
