Monday March 7th will be 'Clean Monday' - sometimes know as 'Ash Monday' and announcing that there are seven weeks to go before Greek Easter. For many, it will be the start of the long period of fasting that ends on Easter day.
In Roda, there is a new head man for the village. I don't know him, but his name is Petros and he lives in Sfakera. With all the changes in local government and a distinct lack of funding, Petros yesterday organised a big clean-up around the village and volunteers turned out to do their bit for Roda. A few days earlier, the accumulations of sea-grass that lay on the beach were cleared away (just in time for another storm!).
All of the palm trees have now been pruned, all the winter detritus cleared from the beach, the roadside gutters have been cleaned, streams opened up and litter generally removed. All this, of course, is part of the preparation, not just for tourists, but for Clean Monday itself, when families will abound to fly their kites. It is such a shame that more visitors never get to join in these events - it is a wonderful day.

To some extent, kernowman, that is a shared responsibility. Let's hope the tourists play their part too.

Yes ,that's what I meant. The litter seen on some of the roadsides leading out of the village is clearly dropped by tourists. At least coming early in the season we shouldn't see so much lying around.
