At 4:00 pm today in Corfu Town it was 36.4 0C. At 10:30 pm, it was 29 0C. The 'Ostria' - that hot southerly wind that warms the island in the winter - had swept in and it felt as though you had just returned to your house and discovered you left the oven on all day. Goodness knows what visitors today will feel as the step down from their 'planes. 'Fainomeno', this was the word that was being shouted tonight. At 6:40 pm - 30m metre cliffs suddenly appeared at Almiros. Those who have sat and looked east from the village would have been amazed at what was thrust up from the sea beyond Acharavi. For ten minutes they sat there, challenging everyone to climb them, and suddenly - they were gone - back from whence they came!

Even the locals have never seen it before, Pete, - as you say it must be the same phenomenon as a mirage.

This is, I believe , a mirage. I've seen many strange phenomena at sea ( including to one I see in the mirror !! ) caused by the 'ducting' of different temperature and humidity air flows. To see a 250,000 tonne tanker suddenly 'appear'' in front of your ship is guaranteed to awaken even the sleepiest of lookouts ( and even the Officer of The Watch !!! ) This even happens on Radar sets. 'Ghost' contacts will occasionally appear at short range which are in fact hundreds of miles away. Great 'photo Steve. I've never seen such a clear image of this phenomena before. Bravo !!!

Absolutely superb pics Steve. Like Johnofish, I too in my Naval days have experienced such phenomenon, which in turn can give one a hell of a fright to suddenly see a wall of water, a cliff in front of you as your ship is ploughing through the water.
That definately is a super picture. Well shot Steve.

Hi Kath - long time no see - hope you and Alf are both well. I can't get up to Koukounikades now as the old camper is struggling. Maybe see you one day at an FGT.
Love, Steve
