Most of us know that Easter is a bigger celebration in Greece than is Christmas. The next most important date in the calendar of the Orthodox Church comes next Sunday on August 15th - it is the 'Assumption of the Virgin Mary'.
It is a national holiday in Greece and it is traditional to return to home villages and even remote locations are busier than usual as Greeks everywhere return to their homeland to connect with family, visit friends, and immerse themselves in the ancient rituals, culture, and practice of being Greek Orthodox. Half of the Country's population live in Athens and a huge proportion of them will go home to their families, wherever they may be.
Churches throughout the country will celebrate the feast with traditions which vary from place to place. Rural churches are jammed with not only worshippers, but offerings in the form of animals, property, and food; some churches even hold an auction of these offerings during the celebrations.

Don't forget - As the sun goes down on Roda today, I'm listening to Ekaterina, sitting in the garden, and singing a traditional song - tomorrow is the most important celebration of the Virgin Mary in the Greek Orthodox calendar - The Assumption.
