When we were in Roda in June we were discussing with Nino and Lyndsey the fact that some apartment owners are charging for the use of a fridge, a kettle, a toaster etc. (Nino does not charge) Air con is being charged for as well - but having had full air con when we lived there this can be expensive so that charge is fair enough - but love the Greeks as much as I do they can be fools to themselves sometimes. I presume charging for these items is to make people eat in the restaurants instead of fully self-catering and in this day and age with people on tight budgets it is absolute stupidity. I had an email this morning from a friend who lives there who has spent the last two weeks with mutual close friends who have stated categorically that next year - if they go back to Roda - it will be on a package if they can get one where these items are not charged for. If not they will not return - and this is after 20 years of going to Roda. If you are trying to promote Roda and its businesses via this site - for which I applaud you, it's done some good, this is one thing which must be stopped as even less people will return. Are these apartment owners completely mad? English people don't usually complain to the owners - but they do spread the word to other tourists - I know from experience the damage this does to businesses. Our friends were also very annoyed that faults in their apartment (faulty kettle, toilet backing up, more rust on the fridge than fridge, broken chairs) hadn't been fixed after they - and some other friends of ours - had mentioned it to the owner on more than one occasion last year - again they have used these apartments for years and have watched as they slowly went down the pan but out of loyalty and friendship continued staying there. They weren't being charged for the use of the fridge etc - but I for one would walk out and find a hotel if I was asked to pay a 'rental' for a rusty fridge or a broken kettle. As I said - sheer lunacy on the part of the Greek owners.

Have stayed in Roda on a self catering basis for 10 years, have never been charged for using kettle or fridge, would not pay it on principle.we only keep water and juice in the fridge and have the occasional cup of coffee(its normally to hot to have tea/coffee)we go to the cafes and tavernas for all our food as even though we are selfcatering we eat out.we like the freedom to get up when we want, eat when we want,do our own thing.I cant believe that the appartment owners are doing this,Things must be bad for them if this is the case.

We do the same - if we eat in the apartment at all is is because I am addictied to the beautiful Greek tomatoes and the feta - and himself has the full Irish breakfast which I don't indulge in - I have fruit. The rest of the time we eat out - but lots of families can't affrd to do that. I also forgot to mention our friends were charged an extra £40 this time for the privilege of staying in a very run down apartment - the words not and impressed and sub standard were used.

Are some of them doing that? I've never heard of anyone being charged for a fridge or kettle. That's scandalous.

I have heard of some of the hotels making a charge for fridges & kettles and to some extent i can understand this, given the paltry sum they receive from the tour companies, they need their guests to make use of their bars and restaurants. The charge for air con is also understandable but i don't know of any charge for a fridge or kettle in any apartments - i thought they all provided these things as part of the basic accommodation. Pete.

I can understand (and am quite happy to pay) the charges for air-con, but to be charged for a fridge or kettle is unacceptable and I might add, unbelievable! I would have thought the minimum requirement in any apartment is to have a kettle and fridge together with the bare amount of crockery/cutlery that is normally provided - I must admit I would not use accommodation that charged for kettle and fridge. In all of our 13-14 years of going to Roda we have only used 2 accommodation providers and have always been totally satisfied with the standard of accommodation / equipment provided. It may help others if the accommodation that is 'charging' for these items could be made known so that no-one else has the same experience.
kind regards, Kath.

I was on the understanding that if one booked a Self Catering accommodation, then a kettle, fridge, and all other condiments and equipment associated with catering for yourself was mandatory.
However, if one booked Bed & Breakfast, none of this was allocated to your room. Although I know that some hotels would have fridges in their rooms, and some we have stayed in have offered a fridge at a small daily charge.
I am to assume the latter is so that one would be more inclined to use the catering facilities offered at the bar or restaurant of the hotel. I am pleased to say where we stay, a fridge is supplied as part of the room without extra charge. Aircon is suppled at a small daily fee, something like €7 per day.
As already said, the hotel owners get next to nothing from the Tour Operators. I can remember our friends who own a hotel saying they got around €8 per person staying. When one considers what we pay, it is very little. On the other hand, I would like the hotel owners being forced into trying to take too much. Times are hard.

My experience (above) is based on self-catering accommodation where I must confess the most we do is use the fridge to chill water / soft drinks and the kettle to make the odd cup of coffee. The most cooking I do when on holiday is a greek salad!
