The following news article is taken from the online Greek & English newspaper, "The Corfu Today", dated Wednesday 27th May 2009. The figures might be down on last year for the same period, but really are two periods the same. For instance some flights from the UK did not leave until the 4th May, some even later, so this would change the figures. It is good to see however, that the predicted drop was way out. Good news for all. Good news for the Tourist Board who have been doing a far bit over the past months.

"Resist" the Corfu tourist arrivals-Reduction and May
Corfu tourist withstanding the conditions in the international financial crisis. This conclusion is reached by some elements of arrivals by charter flights from 1 to 26 May at the airport. According to the Y.P.A. yesterday as Tuesday, there were 78,971 arrivals, compared to 85,746 in 26 days of May last year, a decrease of -7.8%. These figures may, however, differentiated-enter, and by the end of the month the three days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), with high traffic at the airport. In any case, the movement of arrivals is far from the forecast decrease of 30% and 40%, made in March and April.[/i]

The folowing news article was taken from the online Greek and English newspaper, "The Corfu Today", dated Tuesday 3rd June 2009. Sad figures showing the fall in visitors to Corfu for the first month of the season. Lets hope this is not reflected throughtout the year. We also have to take into consideration that a number of our airports did not actually start their charters until 4th May, although I do not think this actually reflects the large decrease in numbers.
Yeiamas, Chris

These figures are no surprise, Chris, you can see the mix of tourists changing this year. There are other countries not mentioned in the report who have rarely been represented in the past. One wonders what is happening to promote Corfu in France as, in addition to increasing numbers flying in, there are a lot more French cars on the roads. I doubt if there is any data about people driving to Corfu, but it's definitely on the increase.

The following news item is taken from the online Greek newspaper, "The Corfu Today" dated 19th August 2009.
This may give some answer to your question Steve. For those living in the East and Sout East of France, I would imagine would not take too long to get to the ferries. Also I wonder how many of the ferry passengers are from the UK, taking alternative routes to Corfu in a hope of saving, or considering making the most of a holiday by alternative travel and directions. Certainly interesting figures, and to see a bit of good news on the Tourist Problems of the island.
Yeiamas, Chris
Steadily increased traffic at the Port
As the Airport recorded a fall in traffic, but this is not happening at the Sea Port, as there are arrivals from Igoumenitsa-Patras and Italy in August first 15 days have better picture than last year. According to data presented by information, the Corfu Channel (the K.L.K. was unable yesterday to provide sufficient data traffic) of 1-16 August, numbers from Igoumenitsa are 76,675 passengers last year when all the passengers all August was 132,800. Vehicles from Igoumenitsa had this year from 1 through 16 August was 26,036, in August 2008 40,213. From Italy to Patras and Corfu, the first 16 days of August of this year reached 30,663 passengers in Corfu, and the whole of last August reached 49,361 passengers in Corfu. In the same line of vehicles were the first vehicles 16 days of August 6498 vehicles in August last year when we had 9860.
"They rise" Increased traffic remains in port, both from the large volume of visitors arriving on the island, and visitors who leave. "Until now, we do not always have something official for us, to show increasing traffic of visitors compared to the visitors of the period of 2008," said the harbor master G. Kontopoulos. He added that the Central Port organized a class project so far kept accurately so far, are not observed or delays or route deviations to ships.[/i]

The following news is taken from the Greek Travel notification of the 19th August 2009
Ionian Life in Tourism - Figures for first half of 2009
The last information of air arrivals for July in major airports around the country (accounting for more than 98% of total air arrivals) show that the adverse effects caused by tourism in the Greek world economic crisis is ongoing. In July, one of two months with the highest tourist traffic in our country, the decline of arrivals in individual regions of the country continues. According to the Institute of Tourist Research KSI Forecasts (ITEP) the Ionian Islands are down in 1st half of the year by -13.4%. January-July arrivals at the airport was 403,089 tourists, compared to 446,805 last year and 471,095 in 2007.[/i]

Interesting figures, Chris, - if one in four UK enquiries for a Corfu holiday was sent elsewhere because 'Greece is full', then that alone would account for the drop in numbers. That is quite within the realms of possibility.

The 8.6% decline of arrivals at the airport in August
A fall by 8.61% was recorded at the end of August in tourist arrivals from abroad to Corfu compared with the corresponding month last year according to CAA figures. However, outside the expected decline of Great Britain and Germany, there are hopeful messages such as, albeit small, increases from the Netherlands, 53 - 55%. This is similar for Poland and Switzerland. France at 5% and Czech Republic at 9.2%, which have increased since last year. According to the Airport Manager. passengers that arrived in August reached 172,402 compared to 188,638 in the corresponding period of 2008. The losses, however, recorded in arrivals by charter flights, appears to be covered by visitor arrivals via Egnatia and the ferry line.
This is an edited version taken from the Corfu Today online, dated 2nd September. As you will see, figures for UK visitors is still on the fall, as other increase. Overall the figures in total are down again on this time last year.

Increase of 11% of arrivals at the Port in August
Arrivals at the port in August, "saved the game" for the Corfu tourism as a significant increase in passenger traffic on Corfu - Igoumenitsa, balancing the losses from the airport. Typically, the rate of growth reached 11%, corresponding to 15,000 visitors over the corresponding period last year. Details according to data released by the Port Authorities, in August this year came to 147,428 compared to 132,832 passengers last year. There was also an increase in August traffic to Paxos (percentage 60.21%) and handled 7,804 passengers to 4,871 last year. Increased traffic on lines Corfu - Saranda (8.11%) in 8142 to 7,531 visitors in 2008 as the route Igoumenitsa - Lefkimmi (by 8.19%), with 20,274 to 18,739 passengers last year.
The edited version of an article in the Corfu Today, dated 5th September. It is good to see that at least an increase in ferry traffic is proving beneficial towards the tourist figures. It would be good to see how many passengers from the UK are actually arriving by ferry.

Unfortunately, Chris, the figures for Corfu Town do tend to distort the picture of what is happening in the resorts.

Figures for the end of the season, provided by Corfu Airport, show a decrease in the numbers of visitors overal for 2009. From the 1st April to 31st October, a total of 740,715 passengers arrived through the airport, compared to 819,147 in 2008. This equates to a drop of 78,432 over the year. This indicates a drop of 9.1% on the previous year.
All though this is not good news for the tourist industry in general, it has worked out better, as the Tourist pundits were forecasting a drop of 30-40% throughout 2009.
One good bit of news, October actually saw an increase in passengers for the month, a total of 44,003, compared to 41,683, an increase of around 9%. However, the German market actually took 30% of the October arrivals.
Lets see what happens next year. Air Taxes have already gone up. Some prices in the brochures and online are already showing increases. Already seen one accommodation that was just under £300 per person, is now over £500. This, although somewhat expensive, is due to changing the board from SC to B&B. Over £200 for breakfast. Tour Operators, what are you doing?
