I am not sure whats is going on in the high street.Ive been to three travel agents today to check availability of holidays to Roda.
First one told me that there were no holidays for Roda but I could go to Sidari.
Second told me that Roda was full but again I could go to Sidari.
Third was able to give me several options for Roda .
I wonder if the first two agents were trying to fill Sidari first or are they on commission for selling holidays to Sidari.?
If they are right and Roda is full then it should be a very busy year for Roda.

Thanks, Ian - the 'old chestnut' is being used again. It needs to be made clear to these people that:
RODA IS NOT FULL!
... you have it on good authority and I think everyone who gets this response should challenge it and refer the person telling you to this site. Accommodation owners in Roda are worrying about the economy and the possibility that people will not come. If anyone gets this reply, then perhaps you can ask directly 'why are you telling me this when I know it is not true?'
It would be good for us to know which accommodation is being referred to so that we can inform the owners. When Roda is full, we'll tell you.

From our very thorough scouring of all the travel books here in Bristol, it would seem that the only tour operator to offer self catering apartments (which is what most people want), is Olympic and as the airline that they used was XL there are no holidays to Roda on offer from this company. (from Bristol anyway). All the other operators who have holidays in Roda only offer the choice of four hotels or the two big complexes. Not one of them use any of the apartment accommodation. With reference to my last posting (above), my fear is that the owners of all the apartments will get so financially desperate that they will sell, (at a ridiculous price) to the tour operators who will then be raking it in (AGAIN). JackieM

Hi Jackie, who knows what games the travel companies play to maximise profits. I guess that they would call it business acumen, but I struggle with the fact that everybody involved in any good deal needs to benefit equally. With package tour operators, their customers and their suppliers, I feel that the balance is quite wrong. The only way this inequality can be maintained is for them to continually find new suppliers as the old ones become disillusioned or go out of business. That is what is happening in Corfu and customers would need to boycott new destinations for things to change.

:)hi everyone, could you let us know some tips to get the best deals, apartment and flights separately or best package because all we can see at the moments is ridiculous prices... could go to the Caribbean from Madrid in all in hotel for these prices...we all love Roda but when u put all together, meals out every night, drinks, shopping... the amount is getting ridiculous and knowing the tourism industry in Spain, Roda might suffer next summer. it has been a very hard winter for us, even if the canary islands is the only place in the sun in the winter at 4 hours of the rest of Europe. Please keep us inform... thank for the good work ur doing in this website, big hug to ev1 in Roda. Myriam Carolina

Hi myriam carolina - if I remember correctly, you do live in the Canaries. How do you normally get to Corfu - is it via Madrid or the UK? We know that UK tour companies are inflating prices to persuade visitors to go to other destinations where they make more money. There is a lot of negative propaganda surrounding the value of the euro against the GB pound and 2009 and the tour companies are perpetuating that to help their campaigns. As a result of their exploitation of small holiday communities, tour companies are obliged to keep moving the boundaries to maintain profits. We, the tourists, are being deceived and it us who need to tell the tour companies that we will not continue to be moved on to new resorts because we quite like some of the old ones! Unless or until we do, they will continue to play games.
Let us know your usual route and we'll see if anyone can help.

Yiasas, I was talking to a workmate about holidays today. She is going towards end of July. Had heard of lots of good reports on Roda(apart from mine) so looked at booking. Selfcatering like us. Was told no availability in Roda. So has booked Thomson Gold on Ibiza for 11nights more than double what John and I are paying for 14nights. Bev.

Thanks for reminding me, Bev - ABTA have still not replied to my letter dated 25th March. I have now issued a formal complaint.

I have friends who have had the same sort of dealing. Decided to go to Corfu, was told nothing available, and also ended up in the Balearics. Which ironically they were trying to avoid this for a change. I am writing to ABTA and Thomson on this matter on their behalf. Chris

Chris - if you write to ABTA, then write to Consumer Affairs and refer to the Code of Conduct. You can actually read their Code of Conduct online.
Good Luck Steve

Kalimera, Steve and Chris, the travel companies do seem to be pushing the Baleriacs this year with the economic downturn. 1st time in 10 years I have seen a massive ad campaign on TV for the islands. Italy is also pushing. Maybe Greece needs to also do some advertising. There are going to a lot of people looking at last minute deals. Bev.
