We are at that time when the warnings are going out about a high danger of wild fires. The fire spotter planes fly everyday to check for fires starting. The grass undergrowth is very dry and so vulnerable to any potential fire starting. Please take care when you are out and about in the countryside, either in the car or walking. Please dispose of cigarettes and matches safely, take rubbish and glass bottles back to your accommodation for disposal. Fortunately I've not heard of any fires here on Corfu or seen any on Albania but mainland Greece has had several and the government has issued warnings.

And there have been a couple of massive fires, one on Kefalonia and a massive one on Cyprus killing 4 people and totally destroying several properties and over 10,000 stremata of land.

There was a lot of activity from the fire-spotter planes yesterday afternoon. Some of the overpasses were very low. Not seen any reports of fires though, thankfully.

We so nearly had a fire opposite my house yesterday. The wires at the top of the telegraph pole sparked and set fire to the grasses below..............it cut off electric. Luckily we could smell the burning an very quickly neighbour had a long hose out. Fire brigade arrive within 5 minutes but by then fire was out and area being damped down. Firemen gave advice, took notes and left. It took nearly 6 hours before Electricity was returned.

It could have been different if you hadn't been around and acted so promptly as the grass caught fire. I remember the electric pole near the new Crusoes catching fire. They couldn't put the fire out until the electric was turned off. The fire planes are certainly more active recently.

In the light of the horrendous wild fires seen at the Turkish Aegean resorts I would like to take the opportunity to remind our visitors to take extra care when out and about. The grass and undercover is tinder dry as it is several months since we have had any decent amount of rain. So please be very careful when out and about when disposing of cigarette ash and butts. Please take all rubish home with you, especially anything glass, which can concentrate the sun's rays and start a fire. The fire planes are very active at the moment, and fire engines are in position around the island at potential hot spots. We have been lucky so far that any fires have been small and easily managed, but we shouldn't drop our guard.

Warnings have been sent to our phones here that we are on the highest alert for wildfires. There was one yesterday down in the south of the island near Lefkimmi which they have managed to get under controll using firefighters helped by water dropped by planes. There was also a fire near Kavos, it too has been brought under control. The fires on the outskirts of Athens and on the island of Evia continue to blaze uncontrolably and firefighters have been sent from the UK to help with the fight. There are 12 ferries waiting off the north of Evia to evacuate people if the situation gets worse. Many areas on the outsjkirts of Athens have been totaly devastated and whole villages lost. The primeminister is calling it a biblical catastrophe and has alotted funds for the regeneration of the affected areas.

There have been a couple of small fires recently in the island. One at Agios Ioannis near the gipsy encampment and the other amonst reeds at tthe lagooa at Halikiopoulos in the south of the island. Both fires were quickly out out using fire engines and planes dropping water. We still are very much on high alert with no rain in sight, at least for the next ten days.

There was a forest fire at Velonades a couple of days ago thet was quickly put out by the three fire engines sent to it. Thnakfully they have had a good downpour on the island of Evia which will help with the fires there. The local council are colecting food and essentials at the town hall in Acharavi.
