I was sorting out a bookcase and came across this Olympic brochure Steve must have kept from 1981, it shows a very different Roda from the one we know now. There isn't even a beach road to Acharavi! Of the accommodation I think Metallinos might be the only one still there today, although at the moment available via the Kosmas Apartments. I have also included the photo for Canal d'Amour at Sidari, a little different now.

I remember Roda like this, the first time I went was 1974.

I first came to Corfu on a cruise ship in 1971 and 1973 but we stayed in the central region. I remember being driven passed the former Durrell houses, Glyfada and of course the old town. Almost thirty years before I came back. I will put one or two more on of Corfu then.

We stayed in Spiros Banos villa. His parents where alive then and his mother would come out to us with Apple's. She was lovely. Our favourite place at an evening was Taverna Pangalos. I made good friend's with Nikos nieces Katarina and Louli. Great times.

It's lovely to here of Roda in the past Valk. So many people miss Pangolos and their roast lamb. The upstairs has been tastefully turned into an Airbnb holiday apartment.

Oh lovely. Hopefully we will get there in June, staying at the Roda Park villa.

I think everyone is holding their breath for the season. I was talking to Kostas and Nikos at Roda Oasis and, like all the Roda businesses they have concerns about how the season will pan out. Everyone is hoping that there will be some sort of a season. The alternative is not a place people want to imagine. So saying that there was a lot of pre-season activity at the hotel as with many of the businesses here in Roda, ever hopeful that the tourist will come.

You could get to Acharavi Jan - but you needed a machete and a large torch!! very narrow strip of beach and the sea on one side and a swathe along the whole coast of bamboo and some type of reed which cut you to ribbons if you tried to pull it up. Was gradually cleared but it took a few years. There wasn't much in Acharavi when you got there but we used to go to a friend's bar - we always made sure we got a lift back! There was ONE public telephone (call box) for all of Roda and Acharavi (this was 1979). At the other end of Roda it was possible to drive along the beach from Golden Sands to Roda - past the French house and a small cottage which was falling into the sea - it was set on fire by some students. The French house was a disputed property - the owner had died and the heir could not be found. We often got a lift back to Roda from Alex at Golden Sands. Happy days and lots of happy memories. The Olive Press, Cri Cri - all gone now. Such a shame - that was the real Corfu we fell in love with in the 70's. The thing which made us laugh was Tropicana - a small bar (more like a large shed) with a pool table outside! Other half was a semi-professional snooker player and it did his head in - the table was so buckled and bent you couldn't pot a ball to save your life - bit different now!!
