This notice appeared outside the church here in Roda. Although I don't know Richard, some of you may do. Sixty is way too young to pass away, I am sure our thoughts are with his widow and his family.

Apparently Richard was from Sidari but came to Roda and frequented the Drunken Sailor. He is to buried in the British Cemetery, which if you haven't been, is a beautiful peaceful garden around the graves with tortoises and a lot of history. Our thoughts are also with the family of the British lady who died yesterday after a two week battle with covid in Corfu hospital. We don't know if she was a visitor or a resident.

Many people will kmow Gayle Dennett who, with her former husband, ran the Melinda apartments. Their son Dionosos was tragically killed in a road traffic accident early on Monday morning when his car left the road. He completed his military service out here last year and would have been 21 next week. The whole village is in shock as the family is very well known. The funeral is tomorrow at Sfakera. Our thoughts are with his family at this awful time.

I am due to stay there beginning of September. RIP Dionosos

The funeral was attended by approximately 500 people: the church rammed, the whole village square packed and all the way up the village road. And it was very very hot even after 6pm......water was brought in so those who needed it could have. Many staff from the places where Dionysis had worked, plus others who knew him. The footballers of Sfakera where he was a player and many youngsters who would have been at school with him; plus a large majority of the villagers from Roda and Sfakera and several tourists who knew him. Many were carrying flowers and even more were in tears. The service was long and in parts.....the top Papas for the North of Corfu attended to lead prayers relayed by tannoy outside the Church. A very sombre occasion in sending off a much loved young man. The shock of his passing (and the injuries to young Nikos who was in the car) will remain in Roda, Sfakera and Platonas for a long time. I have memories of him playing football for Sfakera, not a great player but commited and gave of his best........I remember reporting on his first goal in a league game and how all his team mates mobbed him.......that memory shows how loved he was and will remain with me. RIP Dionysis.

It was a long service and several people were overcome with the heat, fortunately there were ambulence personel there to help. I have never seen such a turn out, with every business in Roda repersented, leaving their businesses to be run by staff or closing for a period. I didn't stay for walking around the coffin as there were so many more deserving people. We did go to the wake at the Tropicana to show support to Gayle and Alan and ofcourse Adonis. I was talking to a lady at the wake and I found out that the service was so long as they had to perform a wedding first and married Dionysis to God so that he would have a single woman in heaven to be his wife so that he wouldn't be alone. I haven't discovered yet why he had a white hearse and coffin, it could simply be to do with him not being 21 until next week. He was buried in a corner of the Sfakera cemetery beside the little chapel there. I will go and pay my respects next time I go to talk to Steve.

Many of our visitors will have known old Billy who was a long standing resident on Roda. Sadly he passed away at the end of last week and with be buried in Sfakera after a service in our lovely church, St George. A quiet unassumingan who enjoyed a quiet drink summer and winter at Smileys ( Alexandros in the village). I'm sure he worked for Top Gear during the season for some time. I'm certain his funeral will be well attended as he was well liked in the village. Kalo taxidi (good journey) our friend.
