I was having coffee at Skouna with Dave and Paula when I noticed this bright yellow lifeguard vehicle. Then I saw two life guarding platforms had appeared more or less overnight. I rember there being one when I first discovered Roda but that around 20 years ago and the platform fell into dis-repair. I will try and find out more. Watch this space, as they say!

I haven't found out where the finance has come from, but it seems that there are now manned lifeguard stations on many of the tourist beaches now. Each one have two lifeguards like at Roda. It is good to know that our swimmers will be safer now.

Better late than never........Greece has a very high death rate for drownings whilst swimming so this should hopefully help reduce that figure if they get installed at all beaches.

I know we now have lifeguards during the daytime here in Roda, which is assuring. But, please be careful when swimming at other beaches. We have had two terrible accidents quite locally over the last 48 hours. A British woman was killed by a speed boat whilst swimming off Avlaki beach which is just next to Kassiopi. Apparently the boat was being driving by three young men and the accident happened about 300 meters from the shore. Then yesterday a 26 year old was drowned at the nearby Kerasia beach. Please take care when in the water, distances are deceptive and some speed boats do come too close to the shore.

On Friday I was at Alexandros near Roda Beach and it was a very windy afternoon. We saw several people both teenagers and adults getting into trouble on inflatables. They floated out but couldn't easily get back into the wind. Others had to go out and rescue them in 2 cases and in the others the women let their inflatables go (and end up in Roda by Afrodite) and make their way ashore further along the coast and walk back to Roda Beach. Best advice is to stay out of the sea on a day when the wind is strong.
