The fire risk for Corfu has gone to the top rating of 4, meaning there is imminent danger of wildfires. The fire spotter planes have been out and about for weeks now and fire engines are placed in strategic positions around the island, rather than at their bases. There have already been several small fires around the island which were quickly extinguished. So please be very careful with the disposal of cigarettes when out and about in the countryside. No bbq's either except in a proper bbq positioned well away from the grass. Also don't discard glass bottles carelessly as they can cause fires by magnifying the sun's rays. The emergency number to phone is 112 (even with no credit on phone) and state where the fire is, the type of fire eg grass or trees, and direction of travel. It would be a much better idea to bring all litter and cigarette ends back to the hotel or apartment for proper disposal and keep Corfu tidy and safe.

And fires to have BBQ on the beach are a definite no no. There is a fire at the landfill. As I read your post Jan the spotter plane flew over Sfakera.
