I know this isn't about Roda, but many people walk along the beach road into Acharavi and will have noticed the decline and closure of Beis Beach. Well it is being redeveloped with bulldozers in clearing the bar and pool area. It is the first re-development of an hotel close to Roda that I can remember. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

The building going up beside the Fiona apartments has now been separated into two units by a wall and a new path. So, at the moment it looks like the blue building will be apartments on two floors and the larger one will be some form of business. The ground in front of which has been cleared and the trees opposite have been polled.

The latest relaxation of the restrictions imposed by the Greek government has seen the opening of the outdoor spaces of several businesses here in Roda, a move from just take-away for many of them. Oscar's unfortunately was closed down again within a few hours by the police as they don't have enough outdoor space- literally this time it has to be roofless! A couple more places have opened up officially in the last couple of days, with Yummies, The Drunken Sailor and Alexandros all welcoming guests to outside tables. Nemo's has filled it's outdoor space with so many tables, joined by Tropicana. Drosia and Dimetris grill room have opened up their outside tables after being take-away only. Only Pirates and Alexandros (Smileys) are open on the beach front.

Floyd has been hard at work with the Dolphin restaurant, and you can really see the difference. A new bar layout, new concrete floor for the restaurant and new decking for the outside area. Once the table clothes on it will look very smart, all ready for what ever tourist season we get.

Walking home last night I came across this work being done at the harbour carpark. It looks like they are extending it onto new land that has grown in the last 10 years or so. I remember Steve telling me that the tamarisk trees were planted on the then edge of the land. Now there is so much more passed it, and extra space is so needed as the carpark is frequently full in high season.

Heading home after my evening walk and a glass of wine with friends I saw that a load of scaffolding has gone up round the former Roda Studios. The work now seems to be progressing quickly. The building that house's HN travel also has had the render scraped away and scaffolding was also going up there. It will look very smart once it is done.

The new businesses next to Nemo now have glass in their windows and are looking almost complete.
The New build next to the Fiona apartments have also had their grounds tidied up and some parking space laid out. They are looking just about ready for rental.
The biggest change is at the former Roda Studios. There is a serious amount of demolition and re-structuring happening with piles of rubble accumulating. The former El Mar is looking very sad with the roof gone or falling down. At this rate they will certainly be opening for the next season.

I reported a little while ago about some work going on at the harbour carpark, speculating that they were extending it. I might have been a bit previous as this photo shows. So not sure at all what is happening. No doubt it will become clear in the fullness of time.

A few photos from a walk into the village yesterday.
The most noticeable change was that to the former Roda studios. El Mar is now a not so distant a memory. New doors have been fitted to the main building, and the area in front has been leveled and half of it all ready laid to concrete yesterday with the other half ready. Decorative touches are being added to the retaining wall.
The beach volley ball court in front of the hotel is now derelict and a new court has appeared adjacent to the harbour carpark, looking very professionnal. I presume that the owners of the new build want access to the beach where the court was.
A new access road has appeared between the fishermen's hut and the tourist shop. Also there is now CCTV attached to that hut! A tourist shop has opened in the new build opposite Aphrodite, next to Nemo's. It is dedicated to selling honey products. Ther is also a car hire place being set up. However, neither place has been named yet. The remaining units seem to still have activity going on so maybe there will be more soon.

I was going passed this building last night so grabbed a quick photo. The light wasn't in my favour but you can see that there are a couple of businesses and the empty ones don't seem too far from being ready to open. he car hire place is Corfu Cars.

At the new beach volley ball court an enormous amount of sand that was delivered was being spread out by a couple of strong young men, sadly not caught on camera. The changing hut has been moved alongside as well. It will look very smart when finished.

The builders at the renovated Roda studios have made an error with the compass printed into the entrance of the building.
the W for the West is pointing to the North!

Over the few days most of the remaining businesses that have remained closed in the village have either opened or are on the point of opening with dates announced. In no particular order, just as my memory spits the information out. Valentino’s after a bit of last-minute painting now appears to open. Ammos Grill room opened last night. The Boat house stands ready and poised but was still closed last night. Makris and Makis are now both open. The Harbour bar has been open for a while. Crusoes is opening tonight. Newport has been open a couple of days. Roxannes opens tonight. Skouna, I think is opening this weekend. Palia Skouna was open, but not sure what is happening there. The Coral has been open for a while and is expecting 50- 60 guests soon. The whole block that contains the Aphrodite Hotel, and Big Ben’s is now open. Roda Park has joined Niko’s and Sandy’s on Church Street (I refuse to call it Coronation St.). Silver Beach is now open, as is Alexandros Pool behind it. All the restaurants are open now on the main street. Most studios and apartments seem to have a few guests. I will have a wander up to check on Kosmas, Oasis and Melinda. If I have missed any off this list that you want to know about, get in contact and I will check it out for you.

That’s great news especially as we hope to be out there on the 16th staying in the Aphrodite. I’m so glad the businesses have been able to open as many bars and shops here are now empty or with new owners .

I have seen some interesting news as I go round the village. Younger generations are now taking over and are keen to bring Roda into the 21st. century.
At the Fiona apartments new signs have gone up, adding Theo’s name to them, and a parking space has been made available in front of the new builds.
The plot of land, many many years ago, where the George and the Dragon was is now up for sale. They must be keen to sell has there are two estate agency boards.
The new block next to Nemo and opposite Afrodite is filling up fast with a travel agency about to move into the last premises.
The former Vibe Bar has been gutted and cleared and a for rent sign is up.
The empty shop where Joanne's bakery used to be, next to Dromeas car Hire, has been cleared and cleaned, so I am watching it to see what type of business goes in there. WAtch this space.
The Blue Gardens is now under new management under the guiding eye of the former owner. There was an opening party with a DJ etc. a few days ago.
I will take some pics of the transformed Roda Studios and add them tomorrow, they are starting to look very smart.
The Roda Inn now sticks out even more now, as do the derelict buildings opposite Makris apartments.
