Greece's new Prime Minister has officially launched the Health Ministry’s national action plan against smoking in public places. Smoking pundits have long said it will never happen, but the first fines have been issued - to both business owners & smokers - and there have been signs recently that it is being taken seriously this time. Several bars in Roda & Acharavi have already taken steps to comply with the law in the face of fines ranging from €100 to €10,000! You have been warned!

The Neon has been no smoking inside for 2 weeks now. They have fitted a plastic roof under the vines to the rear and the now enclosed roadside seaing area is for smokers. It is odd that the fines are bigger for the owner than the smokers. What if a small group come in and refuse to stop smoking...……..how can the owner alone prevent that?
The other thing to note is that there is a phone number to call to tell the Inspectors of anywhere breaking the ban. Not sure if it applies to Corfu or just to the mainland.
These bans are not just to tavernas but also include restaurants, cinemas, buses, trains and anywhere that is designed for children, e.g play areas

It's certainly the talk of the town, Dave - everyone is taking it seriously this time.
