This coming Saturday is World Clean Up Day and Corfu is taking part all around the Island led by the many recycling centres. Of course visitors and non volunteers from the centres are welcome to join in the events to tidy up.
Roda-Sfakera recycling centre are meeting outside The Boathouse at 9am. Please bring a black plastic bag and gloves if possible. Here you will be divided into groups and allocated areas to clean. When we did this in March and April there was a good attendance and friendly atmosphere and a great job was done.
I will also be cleaning from 9am but I will do so around Sfakera. You can meet with me at the rubbish bins on the bye-pass. I will have some sacks and gloves available.
We all look forward to meeting you and helping to keep our resort as clean as possible.
For those unable to attend pleas remember to take your rubbish home with you and deposit it I a bin on the way or at your accommodation. If you are able you can visit the recycling centre with your recyclables. Opening times are advertised around the resort and the centre is on the road behind the Pegasus Hotel; just 250 metres from the traffic lights. Thank you.

Today is WOrld Clean Up day; lots of groups all over the Island will be at work on roads and beaches. Interestingly the new Mayors at the Municipilalities seem to be taking on their responsibilities ------ yesterday early morning in Roda there was seen a team of roadsweepers working with their brushes and bags to clean all the kerbsides around the village. Hopefully a sign of continued improvement to go with the regular emptying of the bins.
The sun is rising; the air is cool and fresh so it will be just perfect for a stroll around clearing up.
We will be pleased to see anybody who wishes to join us to help keep Corfu clean and in doing so show by example to those who currently have a disregard for responsible waste disposal (and just litter) that change is in the air and their actions are no longer acceptable. Small steps, slowly slowly Corfu is changing in this respect for the better and those in charge seem to be coming on board as well.

Perfect cooler weather in the morning for the clean up events. In Roda the team was decimated by illness but still 8 sacks of litter was removed (a lot considering the Council had workers out the day before) and in the roads around Sfakera (mainly the bye pass as sadly so much is thrown out of car windows) I filled 2 large and 3 small sacks. So a good couple of hours work by all involved. Hopefully future events will attract the locals as well.

There are real improvements on the Island visible to all visitors. Of course some are still flytipping, throwing things out of car windows and putting stuff by bins that aren't really collectable by the lorries, e.g. mattresses, pallets, building waste. But it takes time to re-educate and if done in the Schools we will notice bigger improvements over the next few years. The National TV station runs adverts all day re no dumping plastics, littering, no throwing cigarettes out of car windows, safe swimming and these will slowly sink into the mind of those listening. Once the Island gets a new Waste Management System into place and the Landfills truly closed then things will get even better quicker. This hopefully will be put into place in the next year (it takes up to 16 weeks to install and open an incinerator) but depends on the locals accepting they are good and not protest against them in their areas...………..it makes sense to place them initially on the current landfill sites as they will have capacity in winter to take from the landfill. But all this needs to be passed by those in power and accepted by the residents which is never easy over here. This time I think with proper knowledge being put out, public meetings, even TV showing how they work in rest of Europe they will be up and running but maybe not as quick as we all hope.
