The latest news is that The Silver Beach is emptying and cleaning its pool. We may yet see it opening for part of the season, I will keep an eye on it on my travels through the village.

I had a very pleasant evening with Kostas and Nikos and their families at The Oasis last night. The little supermarket opposite Kosmas has closed due to the death in the autumn of last year of Spiros. It has been bought by Takis of Gnesoules Supermarket as a project for his daughter.
As for Metallinos, they are open they are trying to get recoup some income as it looks like there will be no work for Adonis.

An update on the news about Metallinos Apartments. I was talking to Adonis last night and they have just opened the apartments and not the bar or pool. He is working again this year at The Coral Hotel. I have stayed many times in these apartments, and although they are on the main road, because they are at right angles to that road they are much quieter than you would expect. The pools of Kosmas and The Oasis Hotel are on either side with both places providing snacks and meals and the well stocked Gnesoules supermarket is just down the road. It is about a 10 minute stroll to the beach and center of Roda with its bars and restaurants.

Nino's on the Beach issued a statement that they and the pool are open, serving drinks and snacks from 9 to 6 and then drinks and cocktails. So, in Roda it looks like only Pegasus is remaining closed as Silverbeach opened last week. From cleaning and filling the pool to the first towels appearing on the balconies took only a week. Even the Blue Lagoon, opposite the BP garage is open.

I must admit I was surprised to see the Beach Volley ball court being dug over and levelled and the pitch marked out so early on in the year. maybe there are some matches planned, or just getting some training in.
In fact there are subtle signs that people are quietly getting ready for whatever season we are given. Places are being spruced up, painted surfaces rubbed down and painted, and work continues apace on the new builds. With the building next to Nemo now sporting a very large metal canopy.

When I went for my walk yesterday afternoon so many businesses were doing work to get themselves ready for the season. It is that time of year when, if you stop still for a moment, you would get washed down, sanded down and painted! Pools are being emptied and cleaned, lawns mowed and flower beds weeded, the gutters are being strimmed within an inch of their lives, floors pressured washed as is the outside furniture. There were two bulldozers yesterday clearing the beaches of seagrass right along the whole Roda sea front, and the sand at The Roda Beach Hotel has been raked smooth. It, and next door Robalo will have to attend to the drunken parasol bases that have got knocked about by the winter weather. This is when you see usually smart and tidy owners with several days growth of beard with a welding rod or paint brush in their hands wearing their oldest disreputable clothes. It almost looks like the normal start to the season, but if you talk to some of the owners there is understandable concern about how this season will pan out, only time will tell.

At last the work being done of the former Roda Studios can be seen after months of noisy but unseen work. Walls are being broken down to create balconies. Obviously the work will not be completed for this season but hopefully we will see then open for the season of 2022.

Over the last few days the final businesses have opened. These include the Oasis Hotel, La Luz and the Melinda apartments. The Kosmas apartments have been open for more than a week, I hadn't noticed as I don't often go up passed them. The Oasis Hotel is offering its guests an accredited €20 rapid flow test from their in-house doctor, for people returning to the UK, which is a very useful and convenient service as it saves trying to find your own.

Not exactly Rod, but work has started up again on the Baze beach resort on the beach road to Acharavi. The pool area is just a huge pile of rubble with the apartments still standing to the rear. Yesterday they were pouring concrete into new boundary walls. They will have to be working flat out to get it ready for the season. Our visitors who stay at the Blue Garden apartments just outside Roda will be pleased to know the the street lights have been replaced by modern LED ones and the road is now very well lit for those late night walk back from the bars of Roda. The guests at the all inclusive will also see the improvement.

Roda is starting to gently stir out of winter slumber. There are few olives to pick this year as last year was the harvest year. I passed by Theos and the sunbeds are getting a sand down ready for re-varnishing. As you walk through the village you do here the sound of hammers from time to time and general signs that the season is being anticipated.
Not so much Roda but there is going to be quite a lot of roadworks between now and the start of the season, with the re-surfacing work starting from Stavros (Ipsos turn off) towards the Paleo turn off. Various retaining walls around the island are being dealt with after the winter storms. Corfru has been approved for km of road improvements, but I don't think that will go far as we have so many roads in poor repair.
