Good afternoon from Roda. Our day started very much like yesterday’s with clear blue skies with only a couple of tiny clouds to spoil it, big waves crashing noisily onto the shore and quite a cold wind. We did manage breakfast on the balcony, but went inside for our cup of tea and a quick read. It was another cold night followed by a cold morning, but thankfully no frosts, well down here at sea level that is. The early morning light onto the mainland showed aspects of the mainland not normally seen, deep into hidden valleys and mountains. There are still snow fields gleaming white in the sunshine, that add an extra chill to that wind.
Yesterday stayed dry all day with plenty of sunshine, a cold wind and a raging, but beautiful sea. Some clouds started gathering in the west in time to add to the lovely sunset. The snow fields of Albania picking up all the colours. The waxing crescent moon and its accompanying stars lit up the night sky as we walked into the village. What little light the was added a dramatic edge to the night sky with just the barest hint of the sunset. The wind continued to blow and the waves strode ashore in regiments with a background of the lights from the mainland. The at 10.00am on Monday 30th. December was 7.4°C.
Yesterday's maximum temperature was 10.2°C but only, and the minimum was 5.9°C.
The maximum temperature this day in 2018 was 12.5°C and the minimum 3.1°C. A frosty start to a sunny day getting increasing cloudy.
The reported UV for Today is 2 (Range 1- 11+) UK range 1- 8 The UV Index does not exceed 8 in the UK (8 is rare; 7 may occur on exceptional days, mostly in the two weeks around and around the summer solstice).

Good afternoon from Roda. My last weather report of 2019, I hope you all manage to celebrate the new year as you would want to. We had to go into Corfu town as our gas heater was broken and we needed an element for our remaining electric fire. It was a beautiful start to the day with cloudless blue skies, barely a breeze and a calm sea. It was so clear that the islands and the mainland looked so close and in so much detail. The last Costa cruise liner of the year was docked in town. Any passengers going into town would have enjoyed the busy atmosphere as the town was crowded with shoppers and people enjoying the sun with a coffee. We got around all the shops really quickly, it was the first time that I have experienced a butcher’s shop having to use traffic control outside its shop due to the limited parking available. It was very cold first thing with the temperature below 2°C, however we didn’t have any frost here, but we saw quite a lot on our trip into town. There was probably not enough water in the atmosphere to cause a frost.
Yesterday started off lovely, but un-forecast clouds moved in from the east to completely cut the sun off by the early afternoon. It was still quite windy with rough seas so that made for an unpleasant afternoon. The sun, though, hadn’t quite been beaten, and as it sank to below the cloud level, we got the most amazing golden clear light. Everything was bathed in its radiance and the mountains opposite then flushed with delight, and a proper sunset took place. The wind died down for a while and the waves eased as we walked into the village, but on our way back the wind had returned. However, in returning it had blown some of the clouds away and we could see stars in the breaks. The moon though was reduced to a golden glow. It was a chilly 9°C by the end of the evening. The temperature at 9.00am on Tuesday 31st. December was 1.9°C.
Yesterday's maximum temperature was 10.0°C, and the minimum was 6.3°C.
The maximum temperature this day in 2018 was 10.6°C and the minimum 4.8°C. A cloudy start to the day with only a few blue patches and the clouds won.
The reported UV for Today is 2 (Range 1- 11+) UK range 1- 8 The UV Index does not exceed 8 in the UK (8 is rare; 7 may occur on exceptional days, mostly in the two weeks around and around the summer solstice).

Kali Xponia: Happy New Year to you all from Sfakera. Unlike Roda we did have a very light frost On NYE morning; none today. It is a totally cloudless start to the Year with the sun shinning brightly; though it is still only 7c at 10am.
How was last year here...…...well we had plenty of sunshine and everyone says plenty of rain as well. The facts are a bit different...…….we had 14 days without rain than the yearly average...…..February and March were very dry compared to usual -21days!! April, May, June and July were wetter (June had 4 days with average at 3, July 5 against 1). No rain in August, one day above average in September; 3 below average in October. In November it was very wet with 20 days when average is 15 and due to a dry last week December had 14days with rain being 3 below average. The rains we had though were usually very heavy, occasionally torrential. There was a lot less of the light shower or drizzle and the storms were often longer than usual and always accompanied by thunder and lightning.
Plenty sunny days and very nice weather especially in late June, most of July and all of August with temperatures often in the low 30s. September was on the whole sunny days and the last 2 weeks of October into November were a real Indian Summer. THe rest of November was very wet and this continued into Mid Decemeber. Once the early snows appeared on Albania and the wind shifted to come from the North it got colder but also dryer. Lovely sunny days to end the year; great for biking, walking and the views are at their very best at this time as the air is so clear...…...not is the time to take photos of the views on a cloudless sunny day for calendars etc as they are so much better than the summer visitor will ever see.
We in Corfu have also been very lucky with the weather as elsewhere in Greece there have been flooding; landslides; power outages for days and recently snow.....lots of it in a few places. The Greek ski resorts are busy. SOme places big problems; Vilia village in Attika has 3 foot of snow with big drift; Eubora island east of Athens was badly hit in the north Crete to its west and many places in the far North of the mainland and parts of the Pelopenese. Temperatures too have been very low; just last night Ioannina (about 50 miles by crow from Kassioppi) was -10. May places have been showing below -6 and I have seen one report of -13.9c. In Corfu we have got knowhere near freezing as yet......coldest in Sfakera was two nights at 3.6 and 3.8c; everything else over 5c. The several big Medicanes (Mediterranean cyclones) passed us bye on the fringes and yes there was some local flooding; small landslides, power outages and damage to crops and some property but nothing like on the mainland.
We are hoping for a more normal year this year; rains in February and March ready for the potato planting and then dryer through April, May and June with plenty of sunshine. I am starting the New Year with a long walk in the hills; it warms the body and awakens the mind from its winter slumbles with the sun and the wonderful views; the variety of birdlife and song; still blackberries, slows and horta to collect on the way. Of course, mandarins are at their best now and so sweet...nicely chilled if picked from the tree for breakfast......the oranges are also ready and the lemons will soon be too. Yes winter is very nice here. And we have the Celebrations of ST Vasilias (basil) today and the enjoyment of Epithany that the Greeks celebrate so well to come next Monday.
Wishing you all a healthy and peaceful New Year, Dave
